Alirajpur is a district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .

The area is 3182 km². The administrative seat is the city of Alirajpur .

history

Prior to Indian independence in 1947, Alirajpur was part of the Bhopawar Agency sub-division of the Central India Agency . The Principality of Alirajpur was founded in 1437 and merged with the Indian Union after India's independence. The area occupied by the current district became part of the state of Madhya Bharat in 1948 and then on November 1, 1956 part of the reorganized state of Madhya Pradesh.

The population in 2011 was 728,999. The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.45% and was therefore very high. Alirajpur has a gender ratio of 1011 women per 1000 men and thus a rare surplus of women for India. The district had a literacy rate of 36.10% in 2011 , making it the lowest of any district in India. Almost 97% of the population are Hindus and around 3% are Muslim . Christians make up 0.6% of the population. 20.3% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Only 7.8% of the population live in cities.

According to official statistics, the Alirajpur district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into a total of 640 districts. The district is heavily influenced by agriculture and is one of the poorest areas in the country.
