Maheshwar ( Hindi महेश्वर ) is a city in the Khargone district in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . It is 13 km east of National Highway 3, which runs from Agra to Mumbai , and 91 km from the industrial city of Indore . The city is located on the north bank of the Narmada River and has about 20,000 inhabitants.

The name of the city means "Great God" ( Hindi महान परमेश्वर ), an epithet of Shiva . Maheshwar is said to be the city ​​of Mahishmati mentioned in the Mahabharata epic , capital of King Arjuna Kartavirya.

Maheshwar is considered to be an important center of sari weaving . The Maheshwar Dam, part of a controversial huge dam project along the Narmada, is being built near the city.
