Jos Wouters

Jos Wouters OPraem (* 1960 ) is a Belgian religious and since 2018 Abbot General of the Order of the Premonstratensian Canons .

Life

Wouters grew up in Wommelgem in the province of Antwerp . In 1978 he joined the Premonstratensian Abbey of Averbode . After years of training in the monastery, he later studied theology and canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After completing his doctoral studies, Routers became professor of canon law and judge at the Diocesan Court of Mechelen . In 2006 the Premonstratensians of his home abbey Averbode elected him their abbot .

The General Chapter of the Premonstratensians, which met in the South Limburg Abbey of Rolduc , elected Abbot Wouters to succeed Thomas Handgrätinger as Abbot General of the Order on July 24, 2018 .
