Thomas Handgrätinger

Thomas Anton Handgrätinger OPraem (born March 4, 1943 in Ulm ) is a German religious . From 2003 to 2018 he was Abbot General of the Order of the Premonstratensian Canons .

Life

After finishing high school in Rohr and Nuremberg, Handgrätinger entered the Windberg Monastery in 1963 and made his solemn vows exactly two years later, on September 8, 1965 . After studying theology in Innsbruck (1965–1969), he was ordained a priest on June 29, 1969 in Regensburg and then took part in a further training course lasting several years at the Institute for Catechetics and Homiletics in Munich. From 1975 to 1993 he worked as a religion teacher and was responsible for continuing education for religion teachers in the diocese of Regensburg . From 1971 to 1993 he was responsible for the extracurricular youth education and youth work in Windberg as head and education officer of the youth center Windberg and later youth education center .

On April 12, 1976 Handgrätinger was elected prior de regimine of the Windberg Monastery for six years (re-elected in 1982 and 1988). On March 4, 1994 he was elected abbot . The benediction took place on May 31, 1994. His motto is in manus tuas - In your hands .

Since 1988 Handgrätinger has been 1st Definitor and thus Deputy General Abbot, since 1993 Novice Master and Cleric Magister in Windberg and since December 1, 2000 also Administrator of Speinshart Abbey in Upper Palatinate.

On September 30, 2003 Abbot Thomas was elected Abbot General of the Premonstratensians ( Dominus Praemonstratensis ) at an extraordinary general chapter in Rome and succeeded Hermenegild Noyens in office. At the end of July 2018, the general chapter in Kerkrade elected the Belgian Jos Wouters as his successor.
