tasks and activities

The institute dealt with questions of the doctrine of preaching ( homiletics ), religious education (catechetics) and theological adult education , as well as with the research and development of models and materials. In particular, it offered a two-year special training program for theologians and pastors.

In its function and importance for the Roman Catholic Church in Germany, it roughly corresponded to the Comenius Institute , which is still active today within the framework of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). The two institutes worked closely together on several projects. B. the thesaurus religious education and the journal bibliography for literature documentation for religious education and church educational work .

Its function and importance can also be compared with that of the German Liturgical Institute , which is the institution of the German Bishops' Conference for liturgy issues for the Roman Catholic Church in Germany and in the entire German-speaking area.

organization

The sponsorship was taken over by the German Catechist Association, the funding was shared by the Association of Dioceses of Germany, Missio Germany and the Bavarian Bishops' Conference . Protectors were the archbishops of Munich and Freising at the time, the cardinals Julius Döpfner and Joseph Ratzinger .

history

The institute was founded in 1964 by the German Bishops' Conference chaired by Julius Döpfner . A department for homiletics (sermon teaching) was set up by Elmar Bartsch in 1966, later expanded to include theological adult education. Important collaborators were members of the oratorio in Munich and members of the homiletic working group in Germany.

In 1976, the institute, together with the evangelical Comenius Institute from Münster, published the first printed thesaurus on religious education (see below).

It stopped its work in 1982, successor was the Institute for Church Services (Munich).
