Georg Baudler (born July 18, 1936 in Eggenfelden ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian .

Life

Baudler studied Roman Catholic theology , German and philosophy at the University of Munich and the University of Innsbruck . From 1962 to 1970 Baudler worked as a high school teacher in Dachau near Munich. From 1971 to 2001 Baudler was professor for Catholic theology and didactics at RWTH Aachen University. He is a signatory of the memorandum “ Church 2011: A Necessary Awakening ”.

In his studies on the potential for violence in world religions , Baudler explains that in the Axial Age they overcame the tradition of the cult of violence with archaic sacrificial rituals and myths of origin that glorified violence . In the archaic religions, the predators were deified as bringers of death and givers of life. In them the power over violence, life and death was experienced. With the Axial Age a process of transformation began from the archaic glorification of violence to the "non-violent symbolism of God". The realization of a non-violent society becomes a transcendent vision. (Baudler 2006)
