Norbert Mette (born December 16, 1946 in Barkhausen ) is a German, Roman Catholic theologian at the University of Dortmund . His main focus is religious education .

Life

After finishing school, Norbert Mette studied Roman Catholic theology and social sciences at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster and passed the first state examination in 1972. From 1973 to 1984 he was a research assistant at the seminar for pastoral theology and religious education at Münster University. In 1976 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. and qualified as a professor in 1983 for pastoral theology and religious education. From 1984 to 2002 he was professor for Catholic theology with a focus on practical theology at the University of Paderborn . From 2002 to 2011 Mette was professor for Catholic theology and its didactics with a focus on religious education / practical theology at the University of Dortmund.

In December 2006, Mette recommended that schools disregard Cardinal Joachim Meisner's ban on multi-religious services for educational reasons, as well as referring to the guidelines of the Catholic German Bishops' Conference of 2003.

In view of the fact that, on the one hand, denominational religious education meets with less and less understanding among the public and that, on the other hand, the denominational division of Christianity is a nuisance for the faith itself and ecumenical understanding has meanwhile developed very far, Mette advocates a denominational a cooperative religious education that shows the way in a direction that has become due.

Honor

In 2002 Mette was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Friborg (Switzerland) .
