The Munich publishing house was founded in 1983 by Bernd Brunnhofer and Karl-Heinz Schmiel . The first games were handcrafted in a garage workshop. In 1987 Karl-Heinz Schmiel left the publishing house and the game publishing house was professionalized. Since then, Bernd Brunnhofer has had sole responsibility as editor and publisher.

After the Hans-im-Glück games were twice on the selection list of the game of the year in the 1980s ( Greyhounds by Bernd Brunnhofer in 1986 and Maestro by Rudi Hoffmann in 1989), the breakthrough came with the game Drunter & Drüber . The game by Klaus Teuber was named Game of the Year 1991. Hans im Glück Verlag was the first small publisher to receive this world's most important game award. Today he is considered the most award-winning game publisher. The greatest success so far is the multi-award winning puzzle game Carcassonne , published in 2000, sold millions of times .

From 1993 the Hans-im-Glück program was distributed by the Berlin game publisher Blatz Spiele , which operates under the Schmidt Spiele label . In July 2018, both publishers decided not to continue this distribution cooperation. Asmodee will sell the Hans-im-Glück games from 2019 .
