The game 1835 is a business game developed by Michael Meier-Bachl , which reproduces the development of the German railway companies from their beginning in 1835 with the opening of the Nuremberg-Fürth line to the establishment of the Weimar Republic and the German State Railroad . The game was published in 1990 in German by Hans im Glück Verlag with illustrations by Bernd Brunnhofer ; Mayfair Games brought out an English edition that same year.

Game description

The players trade in stocks and act as directors of railroad companies. As such, they build railroad networks and generate profit for society with locomotives.

The German variant from the 18XX series founded by Francis G. Tresham is associated with a special feature that models the development of the Prussian railroad from various smaller stock corporations. In addition to the usual private railways and stock companies, the pre-Prussian companies were also introduced in this game.

Private railways

Private railways play the smallest role in the game. They guarantee the owner a regular income and each have one or two special properties that are used in the course of the game.

Private railway income
Nuremberg-Fürth 5 marks
Leipzig-Dresden Railway 20 marks
Brunswick Railway 25 marks
Hanover Railway 30 marks
East Bavarian Railway 10 marks
Pfalzbahnen 15 marks

Pre-Prussian railways

The pre-Prussian railways are operated as a railway company, i. H. a track network is built and with the use of locomotives the owner receives 50% of the entry result. In contrast to the stock corporations, these railways cannot be traded on the stock exchange and therefore only have one owner. In the course of the game these companies are taken over by the Aktiengesellschaft der Prussischen Eisenbahn . As compensation, the owner of the Vorpreußen receives corresponding shares in the Prussia.

No. Pre-Prussia Home station Working capital
(1) Bergisch-Märkische Bahn Dusseldorf 80 marks
(2) Berlin-Potsdamer Bahn Berlin 170 marks
(3) Magdeburg Railway Magdeburg 80 marks
(4) Cologne-Mindener Bahn Dortmund 160 marks
(5) Berlin-Szczecin Railway Berlin 80 marks
(6) Altona-Kiel railway Hamburg 80 marks

Public companies

The public companies are run by the player ( director ) who owns the most shares. The director builds the track network, trades in locomotives and determines whether the earnings of the locomotives will be distributed to the shareholders or whether it will flow into the company's business assets. Since the shares of these companies are traded on the stock exchange, the owner of these railways can change in the course of the game.

AG Home station Issue price Number shares Working capital
Bavarian Railway Munich 92 marks 10 920 marks
Saxon Railway Leipzig 88 marks 10 880 marks
Baden Railway Mannheim-Ludwigshafen 84 marks 10 840 marks
Württemberg Railway Stuttgart 84 marks 10 840 marks
Hessian Railway Frankfurt 84 marks 10 840 marks
Mecklenburg-Schwerin Railway Schwerin 80 marks 10 800 marks
Oldenburg Railway Oldenburg 80 marks 10 800 marks
Prussian Railway Berlin 154 marks 4th 616 marks

Locomotive types

The trains are named for their range. The 2-train can z. B. travel two stations. In terms of development history, the range of trains increases with the course of the game. As soon as all trains of a range have been sold, the next more powerful trains are available. With the appearance of a new type of locomotive, the rules of the game change and a new phase, as it were, is entered.

In 1835 the following locomotives appear:

Locomotive type number price Occurrence means additional
2-train locomotive 9 80
2 + 2 locomotive 4th 120
3 locomotive 4th 180 From now on 2 operations - after a share round
green track parts are available
3 + 3 locomotives 3 270
4-train locomotive 4th 360 all 2er locomotives are destroyed
public companies are only allowed three locomotives have
train limit for vorpreussische companies is now 1
The owner of the Berlin-Potsdam may express its shares to Prussia and the Prussians into operation
train limit for Prussia 4
The owners of other Vorpreussen can search Commissioning the Prussians also convert their papers into Prussian shares
4 + 4 locomotives 1 440 All 2 + 2 locomotives are scrapped.
The owner of the Berlin-Potsdamer has to put the Prussia into operation, if not already done before.
5 locomotive 2 500 brown track parts are available
Joint-stock companies are only allowed to own 2 locomotives
from now on 3 operating rounds after a stock round
all private companies are closed
All pre-Prussian companies must now be converted into Prussian shares .
Locomotive limit for the Prussians is 3
5 + 5 1 600
6 locomotive 2 600 all 3 locomotives are destroyed
6 + 6 locomotive 4th 720 all 3 + 3 locomotives will be scrapped

If a stock corporation runs out of locomotives, it must buy a locomotive on its next train. If the company's capital is insufficient, the company's president must inject more money from his private assets. If the player's private assets are insufficient despite the sale of shares, the player is broke and the game ends immediately.

Silesia extension

In 2002 Wolfram Janich developed an extension with Schlesien, which unfortunately is not in the free sale.

The game board was expanded east of the Oder-Neisse line by up to 2 (on the Baltic Sea) or 4 fields (Silesia) - Germany is now within the borders of 1937 (except East Prussia). The "small town" east of Berlin (field E21) was freed from the tracks and now has to be built on (with 50 marks - because of the river). On the Baltic Sea, Stettin is another “big city” (C21) replacing the foreign country, which then moves to field C23. Abroad near Dresden (H22) moves to the I29. In addition to three other “small towns” and two “double small towns”, Wroclaw is the second major city.

A 7th company is added to the pre-Prussian railways: as the “ Oberschlesische Bahn ” (for 160 Marks - 4a) it starts in Breslau. It can replace the “Köln-Minderner Bahn” (4), but it doesn't have to. The "Berlin-Stettiner Bahn" (5) now starts in Stettin.

When playing with seven pre-Prussian railroads, two more 2-train locomotives are now involved (so there are now 11 2-train locomotives). For this, only 3 pre-Prussian shares are later sold by the bank (the 4th share is now in the exchange shares).
