natural harbor in the northeastern part of the Balearic island of Formentera . Es Caló belongs to the municipality of Pilar de la Mola .
Es Caló de Sant Agustí (short: Es Caló ) is a small town with aThe place used to be known as a fishing village under the name Caló des Frares . In Roman times, Es Caló de Sant Agustí was the only port on the island. Due to its location, however, it could only be used by smaller ships and boats and could only be used to a limited extent in strong north winds. Today the natural harbor is used by fishing boats and smaller pleasure boats. Commercial traffic is handled in the island port of La Savina , approx. 12 km away .
Es Caló became famous in 1858 through a distillery and liqueur factory founded by the Formenterian Joan Marí i Mayans in the Ca´s Alambí building . Mayans produced the typical liqueur made from herbs and thyme there. In the middle of the 20th century, the production of Licors Marí Mayans was relocated to Santa Eulària des Riu on Ibiza. The products of Hierbas Ibicencas of today's Licors Marí Mayans d'Eivissa are known far beyond the country's borders.
With the advent of tourism in Formentera in the 1970s, the population also increased. In 2007 Es Caló had 373 inhabitants. Hotel Entre Pinos is one of the first tourist facilities in the local area. In the immediate vicinity of the port facility is the approximately 100 m long and with an average width of 25 m fine sandy beach Ses Platgetes .
