Location of the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu

Santa Eulària des Riu ( Spanish Santa Eulalia del Río ) is a city in the east of the island of Ibiza . The only river on the island, the Riu de Santa Eulàlia, which flows into the sea south of the city , characterizes the landscape of the municipality and was important for the irrigation and operation of mills until the 18th century .

history

Under Arab rule the area was called Xarc and was only named Santa Eulària after the Catalan conquest. The name is borrowed from the river, which was already called that before. A chapel was built immediately after the conquest, but it was destroyed by attacks at the beginning of the 16th century. Half a century later, the now existing church Eglèsia de Sta was built on the hill Puig de Missa . Eulària , which was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. A village did not exist until then. The increasing traffic to the mills ( see for example: Molino de Puig d'en Valls . ) Was countered with the construction of the Pont Vell bridge . Santa Eulària only became a place through the Bishop Eustaquio de Azara. He bought the land around the church and built houses in which the first families soon settled. In 1833 the municipal boundaries were finally determined and Santa Eulària became the capital of the municipality of the same name.

On May 21, 2003, the port facilities were flooded by a small tsunami that was triggered by a seaquake off Algeria .

present

Today, Santa Eulària is a vibrant city with an approximately two kilometer long beach promenade , especially in summer . The exclusive marina is large and famous . In contrast to, for example, Sant Antoni, this one attracts more dignified audiences to the city.

In the center of the city, on Plaça d 'Espanya (Spanish Square), is the City Hall, which is one of the last historical buildings in the city. The current building, which has been restored, dates back to 1795 and reflects the typical architecture of the island from that period. Today the building is used for representation purposes. In front of the town hall there is a small square with a fountain. This is right on Sant Jaume street . Behind it is a stone monument, a gift from the city of Palma in Mallorca to thank the local fishermen who rescued the shipwrecked on January 17, 1913. The town's streets run in a checkerboard pattern parallel to Carrer Sant Jaume from west to east. The parallel street Sant Vincent is a pedestrian zone. The Passeig de s'Alamera leads from the south of the Spanish square to the beach. The boulevard has a three-lane pedestrian zone with gardens. The city's port is located at the southern point of the Passeig de s'Alamera . From there, beach promenades lead to both sides.

The Church of Santa Eulària

To the west of the city is a hill called Puig de Missa . The hill is 52 m above sea level. Its summit is dominated by the church built here. The church is dedicated to Santa Eulália. The path to the church leads up the mountain in serpentines. The church is said to have been built in 1568, although a chapel from 1302 is said to have been there. The architect of the church was Giovanni Calvi, who designed it in the style of a fortified church .

traffic

There are bus routes from a central train station to all the surrounding communities, including Ibiza Town . From the port there is a regular service on the water to Es Cana in the northeast and via Cala Llonga to Ibiza Town in the southwest. Catamarans also operate to the island of Formentera .

Residents

The Kirchberg Puig de Missa in Santa Eularia

A quarter of the permanent island residents live in the municipality of Santa Eulària with 30,364 inhabitants (2008). The city itself has 7,771 inhabitants.

The population growth has been quite high since the beginning of mass tourism in the 1960s. From 2001 to 2008 it averaged 6.3% annually. The number of inhabitants has doubled accordingly in the past 20 years.

Development of the population:

While the population growth was initially due to the influx of labor from mainland Spain, the number of inhabitants has increased since the 1990s, mainly due to the high immigration of foreigners. As a result, the proportion of locals has continued to decline over the past few decades. Today, significantly less than half of the population (41.8%) are native to the Balearic Islands and only 14.9% are from Santa Eulària.

The population is 51.6% male and 48.4% female.

In Catalan, a resident of Santa Eulalia is eularienc or eularienca in Spanish santaeulariense .
