Emili Pou y Bonet , in Catalan also Emili Pou i Benet , known in Spanish under the name Emilio Pou Bonet , (born August 17, 1830 in Palma , † 1888 ibid) was a Spanish engineer and builder . He became known for the numerous lighthouses he created and the port facilities of Palma and Ibiza . He is also known as the "father" of the lighthouses of the Balearic Islands .

Life

Emili Pou y Bonet studied engineering for road construction, canal and port engineering and received his first diploma as a candidate in 1852. In 1854 he finished his studies in Madrid as a graduate engineer.

In 1868, Emili Pou was appointed Chief Engineer for Public Works in the Balearic Islands. Among other things, he planned and managed the construction work for the expansion of the port facility in Palma and the general project for improvements to the port of Eivissa . In 1861 he was also involved in the first country road from the city of Eivissa to Sant Antoni de Portmany .

The Ministry of Madrid ( Ministerio de Eduicación ) commissioned Emili Pou in 1869 to carry out a general plan to illuminate the coasts of Spain. In connection with this work, he designed the project of the first lighthouses in the Balearic Islands.

Work

On the Pityuses he planned and directed the construction work on the Far de la Mola in Formentera (1860–1861), the lighthouse on the island of Es Botafoc in Ibiza (1859–1862). The lighthouse of the island of Es Porcs (also known as the lighthouse of En Pou) was put into operation in 1863, the lighthouse of Sa Conillera (1855-1857). Construction on the lighthouse of Sa Punta Grossa in Sant Vicent de sa Cala began in 1864 and ended in 1867. Emili Pou y Bonet also directed the construction work on the lighthouse on the island of Els Penjats , the design of which, however, came from the civil engineer Antonio López.

Awards

He was a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order de Isabel la Católica and the Commander's Cross of King Charles III. awarded by Spain.

The municipality of Eivissa made Emili Pou y Bonet an honorary citizen of the city and a street in the La Marina district was named after him.
