6 takes! is a card game by Wolfgang Kramer , published by the German game publisher Amigo . The game was awarded the German Game Award in 1994 and was included on the selection list for Game of the Year 1994, in the same year it also received the À la carte card game award from the magazine Fairplay and in 1996 the American version Take 6 was listed on the Mensa award list Select of the Association Mensa International . Due to its success, the game was translated into numerous other languages ​​in the years that followed.

The principle of 6 takes! was from later offshoots like horned ox! , 11 takes! and X takes! partially adopted, but these differ in some rule modifications.

Gameplay

In the game 6 takes! the point is to get as few negative points as possible in the form of "bullshit" on cards received back when playing your own cards. This happens when the discarded cards are placed as the sixth card in a row of cards. In the game there is no order of play and all players play their cards at the same time, the order of turns then depends on the card value. The number of rounds is fixed at 10, since all players receive 10 cards in hand at the beginning and discard one card in each round.

The game material consists of 104 number cards (horned ox). Each of the number cards has a different number of "bulls" (1 to 7) on the upper and lower edge between the numbers, which indicates how many minus points this card scores in the scoring.

Game flow

At the beginning of the game, four cards from the shuffled deck are placed face up in the middle and each player receives ten cards in hand. In each round the players simultaneously place a freely chosen card face down on the table, after which the cards are revealed together. The cards are then distributed in ascending order of numbers on the rows laid out so that they always form ascending series of numbers. The card that is created is always added to the row with the lowest difference to the new card.

If a row of six cards is completed in this way, the player whose card has filled the row must take the cards already on the table and leave only his own face up. If a player cannot place his card because it is lower than all the end cards of the row of cards, he must take all cards of a row of his choice (meaning the one with the fewest negative points (bullshit)).

End of game and scoring

The cards received are not put back into hand, so the game ends after ten rounds. The winner is the player who received the fewest horned ox.

Game variants

From game 6 takes! In addition to various house rules, there are some variants that were officially published with the anniversary edition of the game.

Special cards 0.0 to 0.9

In the anniversary edition of 6, published in 2014 ,! 10 additional cards with values ​​from 0.0 to 0.9 were introduced into the game. At the start of the game, each player receives one of these cards in addition to his 10 cards in hand, the remaining cards are mixed in before the cards are dealt. When the order of play is drawn, these cards are treated as less than 1 and can be placed next to all cards; when placed, they take on the value of the previous card + the card value up to 0.9. Another special card may never be placed next to a special card, the next card follows the normal rules of the game.

Shift

In this variant, at the beginning of each round, a player chooses one of his hand cards and passes it face down to his left neighbor, who has to pick it up. Only then is the card selected for the current round and the game follows the classic rules. In the last round, when all players only have one card in hand, there is no pushing.

Rows of different lengths

In this variant, the display rows no longer consist of a maximum of five cards, instead the first card in each row with several bulls on it determines how many additional cards can be placed. A row can have a variable length of at least two cards and can be very long through several cards with only one horned ox and a subsequent card with seven horned ox.

This variant forms the basis for the different lengths of display of the stand-alone game X takes! represent.

In the following years the game appeared internationally and was published in numerous other versions. It was released in the USA as Take 6 by US Games Systems and in Dutch as Take 5! at 999 games , in Finnish, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian as 6 takes! at lautapelit.fi , in Greek as πάρε 5! at Kaissa Games , in Hungarian as Vigyáz (z) 6! at Piatnik , in Czech and Slovak as 6 bere! at Albi , in Spanish as ¡Toma 6! and in Portuguese as 6 ... pega! . The US publisher Pando Games published the game as Category 5 in 2004 with a different theme (hurricanes instead of bullhorns), slightly changed rules and changed graphics .

Awards

The game was awarded the German Games Prize in 1994 and was included on the selection list for Game of the Year 1994; in the same year it also received the À la carte card game award from Fairplay magazine and the American version Take 5 was on the list of awards in 1996 Mensa Select of the Association Mensa International added. In 2003, the Dutch offshoot Take 5! nominated for the Dutch game award.
