7 Wonders is a board game of the type of construction of the game with strong elements of a card game by Antoine Bauza , the 2010. Repos Production appeared. The game for three to seven players, with a special rule also for two players, ages 10 and up, was recognized as the first Kennerspiel des Jahres in 2011 as part of the Spiel des Jahres game award and in the same year received the German Games Award . Internationally, it was awarded the Prix du Jury of the French game award As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année , received the International Gamers Award in the category strategy game with more than two people and was on the nomination list of the Dutch game award Nederlandse Spellenprijs .

Theme and equipment

The theme of 7 Wonders is the construction of the seven wonders of the world , each player builds an ancient city with one of the world wonders each over three ages. The game thrives on the constant exchange of game options in the form of cards and the interaction of each player with his two immediate neighbors. The moves of all players in a round take place simultaneously, so that the players do not have to wait for their turn and a game only lasts 30 minutes according to the publisher or around 40 minutes according to the jury of the game of the year.

The seven cities are represented by large-format maps on which one of seven raw materials is given for the start that it produces. In addition, the price and income of the three levels with which the respective player can build his world wonder are given. Each card has two sides (A and B) on which prices and returns vary.

All moves take place using cards that symbolize buildings and which each player places on his city. Individual ratings and coins are represented by cardboard tiles.

Miguel Coimbra's graphics are based on atmospheric, often dramatic drawings with strong colors and clear symbols.

A normal game round is only possible with at least three players. A few additional rule changes allow a game for two, but are not recommended for beginners. For an optimized game with two players, Repos Production launched its own version of the game in 2015 under the name 7 Wonders: Duel , which was included in the recommendation list of the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2016 .

procedure

Each of the three ages has six rounds, in which each player builds a building in his city. Buildings function as factories that produce raw materials, trading facilities that facilitate the exchange of raw materials between players, scientific buildings that are valuable depending on the concentration on one of three categories or balance, military facilities and prestige buildings of two types that earn victory points directly or indirectly provide.

The cards of each age are shuffled separately and each player receives 7 cards face down. Each player now chooses one of his 7 cards and places it face down in front of him, he gives the remaining cards face down to his neighbor. The cards change clockwise in phases 1 and 3, but in phase 2, so that a player does not always interact with the same neighbor.

When all players have chosen a card, they reveal it and can build the buildings if the necessary raw materials are either available to them or if they can buy them from their neighbors. The processing of the purchase is not defined in the game, if one of the neighbors of the player produces a required raw material, the player pays the same price for all raw materials to the producer and can then dispose of the raw material in this round. The consent of the surrendering player is not required, each resource source can be used by the player himself and both neighbors at the same time. Buildings that have already been created can reduce the price of raw materials for later constructions or eliminate them by using the properties specified on the cards. Alternatively, the player can build a building step of his world wonder. To do this, he invests the resources indicated on his city card for this step and shoves any card upside down halfway under the city card. If buildings have properties that have an immediate effect, they are then evaluated. This mostly relates to income in money. As a further option, the player can discard the card face down and receive money for it.

In the following rounds, the same procedure is used with the cards received from the neighbor. The properties of the building just created can be used immediately. Progress in building wonders of the world can also have properties for future rounds and ages. When the players only have two cards left in their hand, they add one and discard the last. At the end of the age, a conflict scoring follows, in which each player only compares his military strength with his neighbors. The direct comparison produces scoring tiles that count in the final scoring, with victories becoming more valuable as the phases progress, without defeats resulting in a higher disadvantage.

The game ends after the 3rd age. For each player all rating areas are calculated and added up. This gives an overall result of victory points and the final scoring.

Target group and gameplay

The new award for a connoisseur game of the year within the game of the year award is intended to expand the focus of the game award on complex games for experienced players. While the game of the year is always a family game that is also accessible to younger children, the connoisseur game is aimed at “people who are already trained in using games.” The review praises it for the simultaneous activity of all players and the “positive Game experience ", when" cards move into your own display almost every minute. "It works" wonderfully in all possible configurations "and" this varied game [has] great replay appeal. "

7 Wonders requires the player to understand the needs of an ancient city. First of all, the supply of the four classic raw materials wood, clay, stone and ore must be secured, soon paper, glass and textiles will be added. A city can produce raw materials itself if the player gets cards with the corresponding factories and can display them. Or he buys them from his neighbors, whereby the retail infrastructure maps laid out can have a beneficial effect on the prices for the buyer.

Beyond the resources, there are a large number of options a player can choose between depending on the cards in hand and the neighbors' strategy. Money supply at the end of the game, trading infrastructure, scientific institutions in three different areas, military successes, prestige buildings including the wonder of the world and guilds bring you victory points directly or indirectly and therefore represent possible specializations.
