We are the people! is in 2014 in the publishing Histogame published board game for two of Peer Sylvester and Richard Sivél. The theme of the game is the division of Germany between 1949 and 1989. The game won the International Gamers Award in 2015 in the category of two-player games .

In 2017 the expansion "2 + 2" was released, which enables the game to be played by four players, including the superpowers USA and the Soviet Union .

Course of the game

The players face each other as heads of state of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic and have to ensure the economic development of their country through a variety of actions and overcome internal unrest. Here the two sides influence each other.

The actions are triggered by numerous event cards that reflect historical events. According to his choice, a player can therefore e.g. B. trigger the economic miracle as a Federal Republic , let the GDR declare its accession to the Warsaw Pact or bring about the speech of US President John F. Kennedy in Berlin in 1963. The game is very close to the historical development, but allows for deviations.

The game board is based on the historical map of the divided Germany with the states of the Federal Republic and the GDR before the district reform in 1952. Slight deviations result from the adjustment to the game mechanism.

reception

The Handelsblatt tested the game and found that the chances of playing were unevenly distributed: the West - following history - has the better chances of winning, while the challenge for the eastern player is to prevent his state from collapsing. The conclusion was:

“For a short evening of games, 'We are the people!' Nothing: It is aimed at frequent gamers, is more complex than, for example, ' Settlers of Catan ' or ' Seven Wonders ', on the other hand not as comprehensive as some historical wargames that can last ten hours.
Anyone who wants to relive German-German history will have fun with the game. But if it is important to not only gain in terms of control technology, but also tangibly, should consider buying it - or always play the West. "

In contrast to this, shortly after publication, one player discovered a strategy that had previously been compliant with the rules, which enabled the GDR to almost always win and thus found an inequality in favor of the GDR. The rules were then adapted in 2015 by game designer Peer Sylvester and an official rule change was published.
