Broom Service is a board and strategy game by the Austrian game designers Alexander Pfister and Andreas Pelikan . The game is for two to five players, ages 10 and up. It was published in 2015 in German, English and other languages by the Ravensburger games publisher .

Playing style and equipment

A game consists of 7 rounds of 4 to 10 rounds each. The players' task is to make potions and deliver them to different areas using witch brooms. The witches fly, the druids collect ingredients, the collectors brew potions and the weather fairy ensures passable clouds.

Game material

The game material consists of:

  • 1 double-sided game board
  • 10 pawns
  • 5 wooden markers
  • 50 role cards
  • 10 event cards
  • 32 cloud markers
  • 15 amulets
  • 24 wands
  • 60 wooden drinking troughs
  • 17 landscape tiles
  • 2 overviews
  • 1 game rule (12 A4 pages)

Preparations

At the beginning of the game you lay out the different cloud tiles and the other tiles, which differ depending on the side of the game board and the variant played. One of ten event cards is revealed. If you do not play with a maximum of 5 players, the role cards of an unused player color come to the edge of the field as enchanted roles and a number of these cards depending on the number of players is revealed before each round, which can then only be played with a penalty of 3 victory points. Each player receives his 10 role cards and, at the beginning, three magic potions and a magic wand. The two game pieces of each player are placed on the two starting castles.

Course of the game

At the beginning of each round, all players simultaneously choose 4 of their 10 role cards face down, with which they try to plan the rounds of this round. In each round the starting player then plays one of his chosen role cards and chooses the brave or the cowardly action of this card and reads it out. The other players must now play (operate) the same role card in clockwise order or, if that is not possible, skip this round. If you choose cowardly, you can take the weaker action immediately, i.e. either move your pawns around a space, deliver potions to the appropriate terrain and towers, take the resources shown on the role card or conjure up clouds using collected wands.

Only those who choose bravely have to wait until all subsequent players have played their cards. If someone else plays their role card as brave, the previous brave player's action is completely forfeited. Four to ten rounds are played until all role cards have been played. This ends the passage.

After seven such rounds the game ends and the player with the most victory points wins.

The graphic implementation suggests child's play, but Broom Service is a very tactical family game with a bluffing mechanism. There are three game expansions included in the game. With additional special tiles and bergamulets and the second page of the game board, the rules of the game are expanded and more complex.

In 2008, Broom Service had a similar predecessor, Wie Hexhex . In addition, a card game version from Broom Service was released in 2016 .
