Flugelschlag ( English title: Wingspan ) is a board game by the American game designer Elizabeth Hargrave . It is a card-based game in which players compete to attract different species of birds to their habitats . The game can be played by two to five players, but can also be played alone with the enclosed solo rules. The original English edition was published by Stonemaier Games in 2019 and in German by Feuerland Spiele that same year .

In July 2019, the game was named Kennerspiel des Jahres 2019, and in September of that year it was also awarded the German Game Prize.

Playing style and equipment

Wing Flap is a moderately difficult, card-controlled board game in which players take on the role of bird lovers. You wander through nature and lure rare bird species into their suitable habitat and nesting sites with their preferred food so that the birds mate and lay eggs. Each bird card gives you numerous options that can be combined in different ways. The winner is the player with the most points after four rounds.

Wing flap was very well received in the game scene due to the unusual theme. The game material with the dice tower in the form of a birdhouse and the colorful plaster eggs also go well with the theme. It also plays very catchy and has a high replay value.

Game material

The game material consists of:

  • 170 different bird cards (57 mm × 87 mm)
  • 26 bonus cards (57 mm × 87 mm)
  • 16 Automa cards (57 mm × 87 mm)
  • 103 food markers
  • 75 plaster eggs
  • 5 special food cubes
  • 5 player boards
  • 1 birdseed cube tower
  • 1 two-part tray
  • 8 different lap targets
  • 1 shelf for the four goals
  • 1 marker for the starting player
  • 40 action dice (8 per player)
  • 4 transparent plastic containers for resources
  • 1 pad for points accounting (50 sheets; 1 sheet for all players per game)
  • 3 sets of rules (main rules, solo rules and appendix)

Preparations

At the beginning of the game, four of the eight possible round goals are randomly selected and distributed for each round. All bird cards are shuffled and three cards are placed face up and the rest are laid out face down on a draw pile. Everyone receives two random target cards, of which the players can choose one and keep one. Each player receives five bird cards and one of the five different types of food. Each player can choose and keep five of these five bird cards and the five food markers for an optimal start to the game, the other five are discarded.

Course of the game

You collect and place more and more birds in your tableau, suitable for the three different habitats.

The game is played over four rounds. In the first round each player has eight actions, one action per action die. In the following rounds, fewer action dice are available, as an action marker is placed on the end of the round at the end of each round.

The following actions can be selected:

  • take the appropriate number of feeds (possibly roll new feed cubes)
  • to nest a bird
  • let the birds lay eggs
  • record new bird maps

Playing

The game ends after four rounds. Whoever has lured the most valuable birds, got the most eggs and achieved as many round and bonus goals as possible wins.
