À la carte card game price , 1st place

Krass Kariert is a card and trick game by the German game designer Katja Stremmel , which was published by Amigo in 2018 . In the same year it was named the best card game of the year at the à la carte card game award.

Theme and equipment

In Krass Squared is a trick taking game in which the players try to beat their opponents by playing off their card combinations combinations. The aim of the game is to get rid of your hand of cards as quickly as possible and thus win the game.

In addition to instructions, the game material consists of 4 number cards each with the values 1 to 12, two X cards, draw cards and stop cards as well as 15 scoring chips.

Style of play

Before the game, each player receives three chips which they place in front of him. Then the cards are shuffled and each player receives 10 cards in hand (exception: if there are five players, each player only receives 7 cards). The cards in hand may only be picked up when they are all in front of the players; the order of the cards may not be changed after they have been picked up. In addition, the dealer places two replacement cards in front of each player and creates a face-down draw pile from the remaining cards, which is placed in the middle of the game.

Starting with a starting player (according to the rule, the player to the left of the dealer), the players play clockwise. In each round, each player plays a combination of cards from his hand, which consists of one to three cards that must be in the hand next to each other and can thus be laid out together. All players have to outbid the combination of the one in front of them with their respective combination by laying out more valuable combinations. The following ranking applies:

  1. Solo: A single card, the value counts
  2. 2-straight: Two cards with consecutive values
  3. Pair: Two cards of the same number
  4. 3-way: three cards with consecutive values (they do not necessarily have to be next to each other in ascending order)
  5. Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same number

The special cards can be played with a combination or alone, depending on their function:

  • The X card is a joker and can have any value from 1 to 12, which must be announced.
  • The stop card is played alone and the player using it ends and wins the current round.
  • The draw card can also only be played alone. With this card, the player who leads is released from the obligation to place a higher combination than his predecessor. The player who wins a trick with a draw card must draw three cards; if both draw cards are in the trick, he must even draw 6 cards. If a round is opened with a drawing card, the second player can play any combination.

If a player cannot or does not want to play a card combination, he can instead take one of the two reserve cards in hand and sort it anywhere. When each player has either played a combination or has picked up a card, the round ends and the player with the highest combination of cards wins it. If he still has cards in hand, he begins the next round, otherwise the runner-up begins or, if he was the only player with a combination of cards in this round, his right neighbor.

The round is played until only one player has cards in hand, or if, in a round, a player cannot play a higher combination than his predecessor nor can he take a reserve card. The respective player has lost the round and gives up one of his chips. If all players have played their last cards in a round, all players involved in the round, with the exception of the winner of the round, must each hand in a chip. The loser of one round starts the next round.

Players who have given in their last chip are allowed to continue playing. The game ends when a player runs out of chips when they have to surrender one. That player loses the game.
