Game of the Year 2005: nominated |
Jambo is a card game by Rüdiger Dorn that was published in 2004 by Kosmos Verlag . According to the publisher, it is suitable for 2 players from the age of 12 and takes about 40 minutes.
Origin of name and plot
"Jambo" means "Hello" in Swahili , centuries ago traders in Africa are said to have greeted each other in this way. The players take on the role of traders who collect gold by trading as skillfully as possible and using special cards . The winner is whoever was the first to earn 60 gold pieces.
Game flow
The heart of the game is the market stall of every player for whom one can buy goods from a pool and - of course with profit - sell the goods again. The game is turn-based, with 5 action points available in each round. For example, playing a goods card costs one action point. However, there are more special cards in the deck than goods cards. The game lives from the fact that you buy advantages with these special cards or damage your opponent. This also creates a balance between luck and tactics. You have no control over which card you draw. However, by playing special cards at the best possible moment, you can also achieve tactical advantages.
Extensions
So far, two additions to Jambo have been released, but they were not published by Kosmos , but by 12spiel.de . The first expansion, published in 2007, contains 50 cards that can be integrated into the basic game in three independent modules and, among other things, offer an alternative way of winning the game. A second, 60-card expansion has been available since the beginning of August 2009.
Success of the game
As can be seen in the adjacent info box, the game has been nominated for game awards several times, but was first awarded 1st place. Nevertheless, the game sells well and the publisher advertises that the game has already been sold more than 40,000 times.
