Louis Bréhier

Louis René Bréhier (born August 5, 1868 in Brest , † October 13, 1951 in Reims ) was a French historian and Byzantinist .

He studied philology and history in Paris and was initially a high school teacher in Reims. In 1899 he received his doctorate at the Sorbonne with the thesis Le schisme oriental au XIe siècle ("The oriental schism in the 11th century"). From 1899 to 1938 he was Professor of Ancient and Medieval History at the University of Clermont-Ferrand . Bréhier's interests stretched from late antiquity and the Byzantine period to the western Middle Ages. He was equally active in the fields of history as in the history of art.

His main work is Le Monde Byzantin ( The Byzantine World ). Among other things, he translated the Anonymous History of the First Crusade from Latin into French.

He was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres , honorary professor at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, officer in the Legion of Honor , honorary doctorate from the University of Athens (1937). Bréhier was the brother of the philosopher Émile Bréhier (1876–1952). He was married to Marthe Marguerite Émilie Lefebvre (1874–1944).
