The Revue archéologique is an independent French scientific journal founded in 1844 for the field of classical archeology . The ISSN for the print edition is 0035-0737, for the online edition it is 2104-3868.

history

The Revue archéologique was founded in 1844 by the French art historian Jules Gailhabaud , who was able to win over the bookseller and Secrétaire d'État Antoine Leleux for the realization. Its original title was Revue archéologique ou Recueil de documents et de mémoires relatifs à l'étude des monuments et à la philologie de l'Antiquité et du Moyen Âge, supplemented from 1847 to 1882 by the addition à la numismatique. It is one of the oldest regularly published scientific journals in France. After Leleux, it was published by Didier & Cie, then by Ernest Leroux , and after his death and the takeover of his fund in the 1920s by the Presses Universitaires de France in Paris . The Revue archéologique is supported by the Center national de la recherche scientifique , financially supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Center national du Livre. It has been headed by François Baratte since 2017 (as of July 2019).

Topics and selection

The main focus of the magazine is the archeology of Greco-Roman antiquity . However, Etruscan Italy, Asia Minor and the Middle East are also included . The range of topics covers all aspects of material legacy: architecture and urban development, sculpture and painting , ceramics and handicrafts, numismatics, etc. Since 1967, the magazine has also included the Bulletin de la Société française d'archéologie classique as a separate section. In addition to French, the languages ​​of publication are English, German, Italian and Spanish. The advisory scientific committee consists of twelve international representatives. The articles go through a peer review and are only accepted for publication after appropriate reviews.

Publication Process

A special feature of the Revue archéologique are its colored images. The magazine has been available online via the cairn.info portal since 2001. Issues that are less than five years old are chargeable and then freely accessible. The print edition appears annually in two issues. The volumes from 1862 to 1938 are made available online in the Gallica digitization project of the French National Library .
