The canton of Hennef (French: Canton de Hennef ) was one of six administrative units into which the arrondissement of Mülheim am Rhein in the department of the Rhine was divided. The canton existed from 1808 to 1816 and was part of the Grand Duchy of Berg (1808–1813) under French administration and the Generalgouvernement of Berg (1813–1815) under Prussian administration.

history

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the administrative district of the canton of Hennef belonged to the duchy of Berg . In 1806 the area was opened in connection with the formation of the Rhine Confederation in the Grand Duchy of Berg . On November 14, 1808, Napoléon Bonaparte , then Grand Duke von Berg, ordered a territorial reorganization that resulted in the formation of departments , arrondissements and cantons. After December 18, 1808, the “Provincial and Municipal Administrative Regulations for the Grand Duchy of Berg” were followed by the formation of Mairien (mayor 's offices ). On June 16, 1810 Canton meetings were set up in the municipal councils of Mairies representatives seconded.

After the transfer of the Grand Duchy to the General Government of Berg in November 1813, the departments and arrondissements were dissolved, the cantons and thus the canton of Hennef remained in existence. Its administrative area came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 with the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna and in 1816 it became part of the Siegburg district (from 1825 "Siegkreis") and the Uckerath district .

Administrative division

The canton of Hennef was divided into five mairies: Mairie Uckerath , Mairie Lauthausen , Mairie Neunkirchen , Mairie Hennef and Mairie Oberpleis . These took the place of 31 previously independent municipalities (before 1807 honorships or parishes ), which then continued to exist as local districts or dependent municipalities. In 1808 a total of 13,757 inhabitants lived in the canton.
