Canton of Velbert
The canton Velbert (French: Canton de Velbert ) was one of six administrative units formed in 1808 , into which the Arrondissement Düsseldorf in the department of the Rhine of the Grand Duchy of Berg established by Napoleon was divided and existed until 1813. The canton was also a magistrate's district . The eponymous main town ( chef-lieu ) was the village of Velbert , now a town in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1808 there were 11,703 inhabitants in the canton .
history
Until the beginning of the 19th century, the administrative district of the canton of Velbert belonged to the duchy of Berg and was assigned to various administrative and judicial districts ( offices ). The Duchy of Berg was last in possession of the Bavarian King I. Maximilian , who, in the context of an exchange contract on March 15, 1806 Napoleon abdicated . Napoleon appointed his brother-in-law Joachim Murat as Duke of Cleve and Berg , who was raised to Grand Duke in connection with the establishment of the Rhine Confederation (July 12, 1806) .
On October 13, 1807 Murat decreed a unified municipal administration for the municipalities of the Grand Duchy. The municipalities , which were later also called Maires , were the predecessors of the later Prussian mayorries . On November 14, 1808, a comprehensive reorganization of the administration based on the French model began. It provided for a breakdown into departments , arrondissements (districts) and cantons . The canton Velbert belonged to the department of the Rhine and was divided into the Mairies Hardenberg, Velbert and Wülfrath, from which after 1815 the Prussian mayorries Hardenberg , Velbert and Wülfrath in the district of Mettmann emerged. After Napoleon's defeat in the Battle of Leipzig at the end of 1813, the region was provisionally subordinated to the Berg Generalgouvernement and assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
Today the localities essentially belong to different cities in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Mettmann .

Notes on the table:
- The place names were taken in the historical spelling from the Décret on the division of the Grand Duchy of Berg from 1808 and from a place directory from 1811. Deviating from the decree of 1808, the designations of farmers and honors were taken from a Prussian municipality directory from 1836.
- Belonging to the Mairies also comes from the place directory from 1811.
