Canton of Koenigswinter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The canton of Königswinter (French: Canton de Königswinter ) was one of six administrative units into which the arrondissement Mülheim in the department of the Rhine was divided. The canton existed from 1808 to 1816 and was part of the Grand Duchy of Berg (1808–1813) under French administration and the Generalgouvernement of Berg (1813–1815) under Prussian administration.

history

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the administrative district of the canton of Königswinter belonged to the electorate of Cologne and the duchy of Berg . In 1806 the area was opened in connection with the formation of the Rhine Confederation in the Grand Duchy of Berg. On November 14, 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte , then Grand Duke von Berg, ordered a territorial reorganization that resulted in the formation of departments , arrondissements and cantons. After December 18, 1808, the “Provincial and Municipal Administrative Regulations for the Grand Duchy of Berg” were followed by the formation of Mairies (mayor 's offices ). On June 16, 1810, cantonal assemblies were set up to which the Mairies municipal councils sent representatives.

After the transfer of the Grand Duchy to the Generalgouvernement Berg in November 1813, the departments and arrondissements were dissolved, the cantons remained. The canton of Königswinter was temporarily assigned to the newly formed Mülheim am Rhein district. Its administrative area became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 with the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna and in 1816 became part of the Siegburg district (from 1825 "Siegkreis") and the Bonn district .

Administrative division

The canton of Königswinter was divided into four Mairies: the Mairie Königswinter , the Mairie Menden , the Mairie Oberkassel and the Mairie Vilich . These took the place of 28 previously independent communities (before 1807 honorships or parishes ), which then continued to exist as local districts or dependent communities. In 1808 a total of 12,278 inhabitants lived in the canton. In geographical terms, the administrative area of the canton extended from the mouth of the Sieg in the north to the Grenzbach Honnefer Graben in the south.

The canton bordered the canton Siegburg in the north, the canton Hennef in the east, the Linz office in the Duchy of Nassau in the south and the cantons Bonn external and Bonn internal in the west.
