Start of construction and completion

The start of construction can be dated to the year 1245; in the year of the award of municipal rights to Blankenberg Count instigated Henry III. von Sayn and his wife, Countess Mechthild von Meißen-Landsberg , established a Premonstratensian monastery within the city walls, which was occupied by Cistercian women soon after it was founded. The monastery church was elevated to an independent parish church in 1248, probably after its completion. The monastery was moved to Zissendorf in 1265 , and the right to collate the parish church remained with the abbess until the 16th century.

17th century

In the 17th century it was necessary to rebuild the church. Whether the damage resulted from the bombardment of the castle and the city in the Thirty Years War or from the lack of maintenance in the barren war years cannot be clarified by written evidence.

Restoration from 1954 to 1964

Towards the end of the Second World War , the church came under fire. Three shells struck the church, seriously damaging it. In the years that followed, the congregation did everything possible to maintain its church. In the years up to 1950 most of the windows were re-glazed and the roof areas were repaired. It was not until 1954 that the actual restoration of the church began. Important measures, such as B. the drainage of the nave and the securing of the outer walls were carried out. During the restoration, the main focus was no longer on preserving the church, but also aspects of monument preservation were taken into account, with which an attempt was made to restore the church to its original state.

Fire in 1983 and subsequent reconstruction

On February 20, 1983, the church was on fire. The rapid deployment of the fire brigade prevented effects on the neighboring houses, but the church itself was largely a victim of the flames. The tower had to be brought down, the roof of the nave collapsed. The valuable medieval wall paintings were partly destroyed or heavily attacked. The church was rebuilt by 1987.

Furnishing

Murals

Wall painting

During the renovation of the plaster inside the church in 1927 and 1928, medieval frescoes were found in the choir and in the nave of the church. The frescoes are considered important evidence of medieval art in the Rhineland. You can see four different areas:

organ

organ

The first organ was built in 1746 by the organ builder Balthasar König (Cologne); the instrument had 10 stops on one manual and also had an 8 ′ trumpet. In 1876 the organ was redesigned by the organ builder Bertram (Engers, Neuwied) and a second manual was added. In 1964, the organ builder Johannes Klais (Bonn) built a new organ in the historic König case; it had 14 stops on two manual works and a pedal. In 1983 this organ was destroyed in a fire. Today's instrument was built in 1987 by the organ builder Klais (Bonn). The organ has 18 registers on two manuals and pedal and two effect registers ( nightingale , Zimbelstern ). The actions are mechanical.
