Bödingen is a district of the city of Hennef (Sieg) in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place emerged as a place of pilgrimage after a chapel for a miraculous image of Mary was built in the 14th century.

Geographical location

Bödingen is about 5.5 km east of the Hennef town center on the Nutscheid ridge above the Sieg . The center of the village is 175 m above sea level . Bödingen includes the northern district of Driesch , a formerly independent residential area , which is located directly on a high road ( Nutscheidstraße ), which used to be of great importance as a connection between the Rhineland and the Siegerland . With the construction of the railway lines in Siegtal and Bröltal , this connecting road lost its importance.

history

The Bödingen pilgrimage church to the Sorrowful Mother of God was consecrated in 1408. In the decades that followed, the stream of pilgrims to Bödingen steadily increased and helped the Bödingen Monastery, founded in 1424, to grow considerably, as a result of which the town as a whole developed. The importance of the place of pilgrimage can still be seen today from the star-shaped station paths in the landscape that lead to the church . Over time, the population settled in the area near the church and the monastery, as the place of pilgrimage, combined with its good location on the important connecting road on the Nutscheid, promised an economic advantage. Pilgrimages are still taking place to this day, but the flocks of pilgrims are now considerably smaller, even if a renewed increase has been recorded in recent years.

Important milestones

The Compassion Festival , introduced in 1423 by the Cologne Provincial Council for the entire Church Province , still takes place in Bödingen . It is only celebrated annually north of the Alps in Bödingen.

In the monastery Bödingen the famous monastery reformers had John Busch (1399-1480) as a deacon and celebrated later in the Sanctuary of his first Mass .

In 1636 a fire destroyed the village, only the pilgrimage church withstood the flames. The subsequent reconstruction of the place followed the character of a settlement in the form of a clustered village .

Until August 1, 1969, Bödingen belonged to the Lauthausen community . As part of the municipal reorganization of the Bonn area , Lauthausen, and thus also the town of Bödingen, was assigned to the then new, non-official municipality "Hennef (Sieg)".

To the place name

Bödingen was originally the place name of the neighboring town of Altenbödingen, which was established several centuries earlier . To distinguish it from the developing place of pilgrimage, the "old" Bödingen became Altenbödingen by adding "Alten-", while the name Bödingen was then transferred to the new, meanwhile more important settlement that had formed around the church and monastery.

Monument protection

Already in 1989 the center of Bödingen was placed under monument protection as a so-called monument area . The monument protection not only extended to the pilgrimage church, but to the entire village center, which was rebuilt after the fire in 1636. Many of the beautiful half-timbered houses are still well preserved. The oldest half-timbered house, which is directly opposite the pilgrimage church, is a building from 1681 that was formerly used as a pilgrims' home and then as a restaurant.

Since 2008 Bödingen has belonged to the monument area "Historical cultural landscape 'Lower Siegtal: City of Blankenberg - Bödingen'". The main components of the area are the town of Blankenberg with the castle and the pilgrimage site of Bödingen with the pilgrimage church “To the painful mother”. In addition to the castle hill of the city of Blankenberg and the opposite Marienberg with Bödingen, this also includes the entire Siegaue, which connects both sides.

In addition to these monument areas, Bödingen has a number of architectural monuments , including: a. many of the half-timbered houses that were rebuilt after the conflagration of 1636 and are still well preserved today, as well as of course the pilgrimage church, the former monastery, a chapel and some wayside shrines.

Regular events and customs

Since Bödingen is still a place of pilgrimage, the Catholic church festivals naturally play an important role here, which are usually celebrated with a festival service in the pilgrimage church. There is also a procession on special occasions : on Corpus Christi , the above-mentioned Compassion Festival and - following a Marian devotion as a light procession through the rectory and over the old cemetery - on the eve of the Assumption of Mary .

One of the regular non-church events worth mentioning is the annual summer festival of the Heimatverein Bödingen for the whole family, which always takes place on a Sunday in the second half of June in the town center and was first held in 1972 as a children's festival.

This also includes the annual rifle festival of the Sankt Augustinus rifle brotherhood, which takes place on the first weekend of July - usually two weeks after the summer festival - on a festival site in the center of the village and traditionally lasts from Friday to Monday.

One of the older traditions is the annual Whitsun singing organized by the village community , which is probably due to the gathering of food for the organization of a Whitsun festival and which still serves this purpose today. Originally only the bachelors went through the village, today young men and men of all ages go from house to house on the Friday before Pentecost and ask the residents to donate eggs while singing a Whitsun song, which can also be paid in cash. The next day, the Saturday before Pentecost, a large Pentecost tree is set up in the middle of the village. Finally, in the evening, a village festival financed from the donations is organized. The eggs are fried in pancakes with bacon, and drinks are provided. Of course, all villagers are invited. In contrast to the original custom, in leap years it is the women of the village instead of the men who collect eggs and donations in kind.

Since 2011, the event Son et Lumiere (sound and light) has taken place in Bödingen every year on the last weekend in August or on the first weekend in September as part of the Siegtal Festival summer . The pilgrimage church was not only illuminated from the outside, but above all from the inside, and became the location of a multimedia evening at which a concert with thoughtful speeches was held. In each case, a meditative topic was in the foreground, which was considered in the Christian and spiritual context. At the event in 2019 it was announced that it would be the last for the time being.

In addition, there is - also annually - in the run-up to Christmas, on the Saturday before the Sunday of the Dead, in a courtyard opposite the pilgrimage church under the name AugenSchmaus, a small Advent market takes place.

Offers for children and young people

In Bödingen there is a municipal day-care center , the KiTa Pusteblume , which is also open to children from neighboring villages and the entire city area - within the framework of the available places. Your friends' association, in which the parents of the children registered there are involved, not only takes care of the needs of this facility, but also organizes the annual Martinszug .

In addition, there is a large urban playground in a central location, namely near the pilgrimage church , which is maintained by the Bödingen Heimatverein. For the bigger ones there is a football field on the outskirts - in the neighboring town of Altenbödingen , but conveniently located for the Bödingen children and young people due to the short distances - which is also maintained by the local community. Carefree bolting is possible here, as large ball-stop nets have been installed on the sides that are not limited by trees.

Of course, the young people in the Bödinger area have enough creativity to organize improvised meeting places and to let some warm summer evenings end in a sociable way. The local Marienheim , an event building operated by the Catholic parish, is also available for special occasions .

Transport links and accessibility

The place Bödingen is very easy to reach despite its somewhat rural location. From the city center of Hennef, for example the local train station , the transfer is possible by car and taxi in a few minutes and by bus in around 20 minutes. The bus runs every hour on weekdays and every two hours on weekends and public holidays. In addition, there are special bus routes outside of the school holidays to take the students to one of the Hennef schools or back.

By car the distance is good to manage the city center of Hennef, the surrounding villages. The proximity to the A 560 autobahn and the A 3 as well as the ICE train station in neighboring Siegburg guarantees good accessibility overall. The Cologne / Bonn airport is also not very far away, that is only 30 kilometers.
