Gilgen's cake carriage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilgen's cake carriage , registered name GILGEN'S Bäckerei & Konditorei GmbH & Co. KG , is a bakery chain from Hennef - Uckerath . The company has over 40 branches in the Rhine - Sieg area with 500 employees.

history

In 1880 Franz-Josef Gilgen opened his first bakery in Uckerath. Son Wilhelm Gilgen drove the first Gilgen cakes to customers in a horse-drawn carriage. This curiosity inspired the great-grandson to rename the company the cake carriage when it was taken over by his father Josef. But until then, the founder's grandson and his wife Marga ran the company. In 1948 they opened a bakery with a grocery store and in 1956 their first café at Westerwaldstrasse 180. When their son Franz-Josef took over the business in 1979, the café moved eight house numbers further. It is still there today. In autumn 1979 the first branch was opened in Eitorf .
