Dirk Schuster (born December 29, 1967 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach . The son of Eberhard Schuster was active as a defender at numerous clubs and mostly a regular player. His greatest success as a coach is the march through of SV Darmstadt 98 from the 3rd division to the Bundesliga in the years 2013 to 2015 and the following relegation.

With the juniors of FC Karl-Marx-Stadt , Schuster became DDR champion in 1986. In the same year he was with the junior team of the GDR in Yugoslavia European champion (3-1 against Italy) and a year later in Chile World Cup third . In this team he played in defense under coach Eberhard Vogel .

In the summer of 1986 he moved up with the Karl-Marx-Städtern in the upper division squad, but was only used in the second team of the FCK in the third-class district league Karl-Marx-Stadt . Shortly before the end of 1986, Schuster moved within his home district to BSG Sachsenring Zwickau , with whom he played in the second highest division of the GDR, the league . At the next turn of the year, the defender made the leap into a league team: from March 1988 he ran for 1. FC Magdeburg in the East German elite league .

After starting his career in GDR football , Schuster moved from 1. FC Magdeburg to Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2nd Bundesliga in the summer of 1990 . He quickly convinced with his performances and the Karlsruher SC brought him to the 1st Bundesliga in 1991 . He experienced his most successful period in Karlsruhe. Among other things, he was involved in the miracle of the wildlife park in 1993, when KSC beat Valencia CF 7-0 in the European Cup.

He was used three times in the German national team , namely in 1994 against Hungary and Albania and in 1995 against Spain . He had previously played four international matches for the GDR in 1990.

In 1997 he went to 1. FC Köln , with whom he was relegated to the 2nd division. After his time in Cologne, constant change was his companion. From 2004 to 2006 Schuster was under contract with SV Waldhof Mannheim in the major league. In the 2006/2007 season the defender played for the North Baden association league club ASV Durlach . In December 2006 he changed clubs again and signed a contract until June 30, 2007 with the national league team Alemannia Wilferdingen.

Career as a coach

From November 2006 to January 2007 Schuster worked as an interim coach at ASV Durlach . In December 2007 he was the best in the 54th course for DFB football teachers at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy in the German Sport University Cologne .

From 2009 to November 2012 he trained the Stuttgarter Kickers . He rose to the third division with the Kickers for the 2012/13 season , but was dismissed in November 2012 after six consecutive games without a win.

In December 2012 Schuster became coach of the then third division club SV Darmstadt 98 . He succeeded Jürgen Seeberger , who had been dismissed . In the 2013/14 season he rose with Darmstadt 98 after a 4-2 away win in the second leg of the relegation against Arminia Bielefeld (first leg 1: 3) in the 2nd Bundesliga. There he succeeded in the 2014/15 season with the Darmstadt team as second in the table, the march into the Bundesliga .

In the 2015/16 season they were able to secure relegation as 14th - in the away table they even ended up in 4th place.

On June 2, 2016, Schuster signed a three-year contract as coach of FC Augsburg . On December 14, 2016, he was released from the club, standing in 13th place in the table.

In 2016 he was voted football coach of the year for his work at the newly promoted Bundesliga Darmstadt 98 .

On December 11, 2017, Schuster returned to SV Darmstadt 98 and took over the second division team from Torsten Frings, which was in 16th place in the table after the 17th matchday . He received a contract with the Bundesliga relegated until June 30, 2019. After a series of eleven games without defeat, he secured relegation with the team and took tenth place with her in the final table . On February 18, 2019, he was released from the club; the team was in 14th place in the table with four points behind the relegation place and had only won one victory in the last ten games.

On August 26, 2019, he was introduced as the successor to Daniel Meyer at the second division club FC Erzgebirge Aue .

Goal of the month

On July 29, 1995, Schuster scored the 0: 1 for Karlsruher SC in the 87th minute of the UI Cup game at FC Aarau (final score 1: 2 after extra time). He prevailed on the left wing against three Aarauer and hit on the edge of the penalty area from an extreme angle just one meter from the baseline. The goal was voted goal of the month for July by the spectators of the sports show .
