The European Cup match between Karlsruher SC and FC Valencia on November 2, 1993 , which ended with a 7-0 win for Karlsruhe, is described as a miracle of the wildlife park . With this success in the domestic Wildpark Stadium , the KSC moved into the round of 16 of the 1993/94 UEFA Cup .

Starting position

The Karlsruher SC had the sixth place in the 1992/93 season for the first time in club history for the UEFA Cup qualifying. In the first round of the competition, the Dutch runner-up PSV Eindhoven was played . With goals from Edgar Schmitt and Sergei Kirjakow , the first leg was won 2-1, the second leg in Eindhoven ended 0-0.

In the second round, the people of Baden met FC Valencia , one of the most successful Spanish football clubs, the leaders of the Primera División at the time . With players like Predrag Mijatović and Juan Antonio Pizzi , Valencia CF had won the first leg at Estadio Mestalla with goals from Mijatović and Ljuboslaw Penew (2). Edgar Schmitt scored the late goal to make it 3-1 , so that KSC needed at least a 2-0 second leg win to reach the next round. On November 2, 1993, the second leg was due in the sold-out Wildpark Stadium . Coach Winfried Schäfer was not allowed to watch this game from the sidelines after a UEFA suspension and was represented there by his assistant Edmund Becker .

Course of the game

When referee Zbigniew Przesmycki from Poland kicked off the game at 6 p.m., he had the Valencia kick-off repeated, as three Karlsruhe players had stormed into the opposing half before the first touch of the ball. In the first 25 minutes, Valencia CF was superior. Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn prevented KSC from falling behind several times.

In the 29th minute, KSC took the lead: After a cross from Manfred Bender, Edgar Schmitt maneuvered the ball in the six- yard area over the goal line. Five minutes later it was Schmitt again, who volleyed a cross from Eberhard Carl into the goal. Rainer Schütterle lifted the ball three minutes later over the falling José Manuel Sempere into the goal. Shortly before half-time, KSC was lucky again: First Juan Antonio Pizzi's shot hit the post and Dirk Schuster cleared the margin on the goal line.

After the half-time break, the attempt to defend a corner landed on Valery Schmarow , who was lurking in the penalty area and made it 4-0 in the 46th minute. After almost an hour Edgar Schmitt headed a free kick taken by Bender into the goal, a few minutes later he used a pass from Schmarow to make it 6-0. The Croatian Slaven Bilić ensured the 7-0 final result after a corner kick from Bender in the final minute.
