Edmund "Ede" Becker (born July 18, 1956 in Reichenbach ) is a former German football player and coach .
In his active time as a professional footballer, Edmund Becker, who comes from near Karlsruhe, played continuously for Karlsruher SC from 1977 to 1986 . The midfielder and defender scored 19 goals in 94 first division games and 63 second division matches and saw a total of only 11 yellow cards . His greatest success with the KSC was a 10th place in the Bundesliga in 1981 . He was also part of the legendary KSC team, which under coach Max Merkel defeated FC Bayern Munich 4-1 in the spring of 1982 and thus managed to stay in the league.
After his active career, which Becker let end in his hometown at TSV Reichenbach, Edmund Becker was coach of the amateur team of the KSC and assistant coach of the professionals. When during the winter break of the 2004/05 season the coaching position of the first team became vacant due to Reinhold Fanz's "tenure", which lasted only seven days , Becker started as the new coach of the professional team on January 13, 2005.
At first, Becker enjoyed a great deal of support in the club's environment and among KSC fans, which was due to his origins in the Karlsruhe area on the one hand, to his calm, down-to-earth character and, not least, to his successes on the other. In terms of sport, his term of office marked a new departure for the club, which had been in crisis in previous years. While Edmund Becker barely managed to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga in his first season with the team , the continuous development of the team under his direction also brought the first sporting successes from the 2005/06 season . KSC played for the first time in years for promotion and ended the season in sixth place in the table. In the following season it became clear that Becker and his coaching staff were able to form a team that could compete with the top of the second division. With an offensive game philosophy, the Karlsruher SC was sovereign champion of the 2nd Bundesliga 2006/07 and thus managed to move up to the 1st Bundesliga.
During the 2008/09 season there was increased criticism of Becker's person; In particular, he was accused of errors in the line-up and the poor attitude of the team. After the relegation of the KSC at the end of the season, the club's management stuck to Becker, so that the KSC started the new 2009/10 second division season with him . However, after two games without a win, Becker was given a leave of absence on August 19, 2009. After there were further personnel changes in the club management of the Karlsruher SC, Becker was offered the sporting management of the youth center, which he took over in summer 2010.
