Thomas Helmer (born April 21, 1965 in Herford ) is a former German soccer player and current sports presenter . In his active sporting days, Helmer's greatest international success was his triumph at the 1996 European Championships in England .

Career

societies

Helmer started his career at SC Bad Salzuflen and switched to Arminia Bielefeld as a professional in 1984 . There he was on 23 March 1985 (24th matchday) against FC Schalke 04 to his Bundesliga debut. With a 3-0 defeat, he missed a good debut in Germany's top division. After he had been on the field for the full 90 minutes in his first game, he only made three other short appearances in the further course. As 16th, the team relegated to the second division at the end of the season . After the departure of regular employees such as Dirk Hupe and Detlef Schnier , Helmer pushed into the starting line-up in East Westphalia in 1985/86 and was finally able to prevail. On November 2, 1985, the defender scored his first second division goal. Against Tennis Borussia Berlin , he brought his team 1-0 lead and thus initiated the 2-0 success. With a total of five goals, he and Uwe Haas were the second best goalscorer for Bielefeld this season . With fourth place, the team missed the immediate return to the Bundesliga.

Nevertheless, Helmer should play first class in the following season. Borussia Dortmund secured the services of the then young talent in the summer of 1986. In Dortmund Helmer immediately prevailed and became a regular player. In the first few years mostly in defensive midfield and later in central defense, Helmer was one of the most important pillars of the Dortmund game for six years. He had to wait until the 1987/88 season for his first Bundesliga goal and premier goal for the Black and Yellows . On November 7, 1987, in a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart , Helmer first equalized the deficit and shortly afterwards brought his team into the lead. But it wasn't enough to win. On June 26, 1989, the defensive player celebrated his first national title. The Dortmund team reached the final of the DFB Cup and met Werder Bremen . The team around Helmer prevailed 4-1.

In 1992, Helmer moved to FC Bayern Munich in what was the most expensive transfer in the history of the Bundesliga for 7.5 million DM . On the 32nd matchday of the 1993/94 Bundesliga season, FC Bayern Munich won 2-1 against 1. FC Nürnberg with the “ phantom goal ” they scored . The game was rescheduled, Bayern Munich won the replay 5-0 and secured the championship before 1. FC Kaiserslautern . At the end of his time in Bavaria, Helmer was captain for two years. With Bayern Munich, he won three championships (1994, 1997 and 1999), the 1998 German Cup and the 1996 UEFA Cup when they Girondins Bordeaux with 2: 0 and 3: 1 defeated. Helmer experienced the bitterest moment in 1999 when he reached the Champions League final with Munich and only lost 2-1 to Manchester United after conceding two goals in stoppage time . However, he himself was not used. At the end of his career he then moved to England to Sunderland and was loaned to Hertha BSC for a short time . After the official end of his career, the ex-professional played another competitive game in 2002 for the then Bavarian district division club SV Seligenporten .

National team

In 1987, Helmer took part in the military world championship in Italy with the Bundeswehr national team and was runner-up in the world championship. Helmer was a national team player for the DFB between 1990 and 1998 and was European champion in 1996 .

For winning the European Football Championship in 1996, he and the winning team received the Silver Laurel Leaf from Federal President Herzog in 1996 .

He made his debut on October 10, 1990 against Sweden . National coach Berti Vogts brought the international player over the full 90 minutes. After the 1998 World Cup , Helmer resigned from the national team due to injury. The defender played his last game on June 29, 1998 in a 2-1 win over Mexico. In the 38th minute of the current game, Helmer had to be substituted for Christian Ziege .
