Dirk Hupe (born May 29, 1957 in Solingen ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

The central defender Dirk Hupe began his career at FC Solingen 95 , later Solinger SC 95/98 . He then moved to SG Union Solingen , with whom he played in the second division from 1975 and there completed 187 second division games in six years. The tough and reliable defender, also known as "Bergische Eiche", moved to Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga in 1981 . He also played in the Olympic team , but was unable to take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles due to a torn ligament . While at Arminia, he scored goal of the month in May 1985 . After Bielefeld's relegation from the Bundesliga, Dirk Hupe went to Borussia Dortmund in 1985 , where he became a regular. In the 1988/1989 season, the dangerous goal and strong header from Dortmund's captain moved to SC Fortuna Köln . In the second Bundesliga, Hupe was one of the main pillars of the Cologne Südstadtclub and stayed here until the end of his career in 1994.

In the Bundesliga, Dirk Hupe made 214 appearances and scored 14 goals. For Fortuna Cologne, he completed 212 games in the second division and scored 18 goals. In total, Hupe played 613 appearances in the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga. Only Mirko Votava completed more games with 629 appearances and Uli Stein with 645 appearances. In the 2nd Bundesliga only nine players played more appearances than the defensive player.

Hupe's hallmarks were long hair and a thick beard. Max Merkel therefore wrongly called him a "lumberjack from the Bavarian Forest".

After the career

After the end of his career as a soccer player, Hupe became managing director of an insurance office in Solingen. He is married and has two sons.
