Marco Bode (born July 23, 1969 in Osterode am Harz ) is a former German soccer player and since October 25, 2014 Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SV Werder Bremen . With only ten warnings in 379 games, he is one of the fairest players in the history of the Bundesliga. In 1996 and 2002 he was named Bremen Sportsman of the Year .

biography

Family and education

Bode spent his childhood in the Osteroder district of Schwiegershausen . After graduating from high school in 1988, he began studying mathematics at the Fernuniversität Hagen and then studying philosophy at the University of Bremen . He gave up both courses because there was not enough time in addition to working as a professional footballer. At the end of his footballing career, he completed a one-year compact course in business administration .

Professional footballer

In 1988 Bode went from his hometown club VfR Osterode 08 to the amateurs of Werder Bremen . There he was discovered by Otto Rehhagel and joined the professional team at Werder. During his active time, he played 379 games for Werder Bremen from 1989 to 2002 and scored 101 goals. So he was Bremen's record scorer until April 16, 2016. Claudio Pizarro replaced him with his goal against VfL Wolfsburg . In all of his 13 seasons for Werder, Bode scored at least three goals per season. He also scored 23 goals in European club competitions for Werder. Marco Bode was one of the fairest German professional football players. In 535 games for Werder and Germany, Bode was never sent off (yellow-red or red card) or was banned from a game due to collected yellow cards. In total, he received only 15 yellow cards in his 13 professional years.

With Bremen, the versatile left-footer became German champion in 1993 , runner-up in 1995 , DFB Cup winner in 1991 , 1994 and 1999 , and in 1992 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Werder . Bode is one of currently eight honorary captains of SV Werder Bremen.

National team

From 1995 to 2002 he wore the jersey of the German national soccer team 40 times and scored nine goals. In 1996 he was with the team European football champion in England and runner-up at the 2002 World Cup in Japan . He played his first international match on December 15, 1995 against South Africa (0-0), his last on June 30, 2002 in the final of the 2002 World Cup against Brazil (2-0).

After the 2002 World Cup, Bode ended his career as a professional footballer.

In 2002 he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements .

After the football career

At the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal , Bode worked as a reporter for ARD . For the 2007/08 season, the pay TV broadcaster Premiere hired him as a reporter. He has also been a partner in the sports marketing agency deepblue sports since 2005 and has also been the managing director there since 2010. He also acts as a format consultant for the Hamburg production company Nordisch Filmproduktion .

Bode is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Youth Football Foundation. The Youth Football Foundation was founded in 2000 by Jürgen Klinsmann , other successful national players and the lecturers of the football teacher special course. Bode is a member of the board of trustees of Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste .

Bode has been a member of the SV Werder Bremen supervisory board since November 2012, and in October 2014 he took over as chairman of the committee from Willi Lemke .

On March 29, 2008, Bode was the first athlete to receive the Villa Ichon Culture and Peace Prize in Bremen. For his services to sport in Lower Saxony , he was accepted into the gallery of honor of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History.
