ASC Nienburg & TSV Havelse

Todt began his career as a soccer player in youth and in the first men's team at ASC Nienburg . For the 1989/90 season he moved to TSV Havelse, who played in the Oberliga Nord and was trained by Volker Finke . Immediately Todt rose with the team in the 2nd Bundesliga . He completed his first professional game on July 29, 1990 against SV Meppen . In the 2-0 defeat he was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. On the following day against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 , Todt scored his first second division goal for Havelse. With six wins from 38 games, the club was relegated at the end of the season.

Sc freiburg

When his trainer from Havelse, Volker Finke, switched to the then second division club SC Freiburg in the summer of 1991 , Todt also signed with the Breisgauer at his agency.

Under Finke, Todt continued to develop and was a regular in the team in the 1991/92 season. Together with Martin Braun , Andree Fincke , Andreas and Michael Zeyer and later Thomas Seeliger , Todt formed the midfield of the Breisgauer. For the next season, he was promoted to the first division . With 102 goals in the year of promotion, Freiburg was the most offensive and goal-rich team in the second division. Todt scored eleven hits.

On August 7, 1993 he made his debut in Germany's top division. On the opening match day, the SCF lost 3-1 to FC Bayern Munich . During the entire season, Todt did not miss a single game and was only substituted in the game against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 24. He was the only Freiburg to play all league games. With a 2-0 away win on the last day of the season, the club secured relegation and passed 1. FC Nürnberg , who had to be relegated . The 1994/95 season was more surprising when the sports club, under coach Finke, finished third and entered the UEFA Cup.

Werder Bremen

After another year in Freiburg, in the meantime top performers such as Rodolfo Cardoso and Jörg Heinrich had been sold, Todt signed with league rivals Werder Bremen in the summer of 1996 . There he was initially set under coach Hans-Jürgen Dörner , but injured himself on February 22, 1997 in a 1-0 win against Hansa Rostock and had to be replaced by Michael Schulz . In the same game he scored his first goal for the green-whites , which meant victory in this game. Due to the injury, he came to only 21 missions in 1996/97. After he was a regular player the following year, injuries and bans threw him back again and again in 1998/99. On the second day of the current season he received his first and only red card in professional sport. At the end of the season he said goodbye by winning the DFB Cup . In the final against Bayern Munich, Bremen were able to prevail 6-5 after penalties. It had previously been 1: 1 after extra time. Todt played through it.

VfB Stuttgart

After three years in the Weser city, he agreed on a contract with VfB Stuttgart . There he was no longer regularly used in the following four years due to frequent injuries. Due to a serious injury, he had to end his football career in 2003. Todt played his last Bundesliga game on August 24, 2002 against Borussia Dortmund under coach Felix Magath . He was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. It was his 209th game in the German House of Lords. A week later, on August 31, he played his last competitive game, in the DFB Cup against SC Paderborn 07 Todt was substituted for Krassimir Balakow at half time .

National team

Todt played in the national team three times from 1994 to 1995. He made his debut on October 12, 1994 against Hungary . After an operation against Spain Todt had his third and last appearance on June 23, 1995 against Switzerland . In all three meetings he was neither substituted nor substituted. When the German squad was significantly decimated by injuries and suspensions for the European Championship final in 1996 , Todt was nominated by national coach Berti Vogts and flown in for the final, but was not used.

Nevertheless, he and the team received the Silver Laurel Leaf for winning the European Championship .

After the active career

After his career as a footballer, he was Hertha BSC's chief scout for a year . After the end of the 2004 season he began an internship in the capital city editorial office of Der Spiegel and Spiegel Online magazine . From July 2005 he wrote as a volunteer for the online edition of the magazine and was employed as an editor in the “Panorama” section. In the summer of 2007 Todt quit his job at Spiegel Online.

From June 1, 2008, he headed the Hamburg SV's youth department . On June 25, 2009 Todt resigned from this position. He justified his decision with the lack of trust with club boss Bernd Hoffmann . On February 9, 2010, Todt became head of the youth training center at VfL Wolfsburg . On June 1, 2011, the contract, which ran until 2013, was terminated at Todt's request.

On June 3, 2011, Todt succeeded Thomas Ernst as manager at VfL Bochum . Here he signed a two-year contract. On April 8, 2013 he was released from his duties together with trainer Karsten Neitzel .

For the 2013/14 season he took over the position of sports director at Karlsruher SC . On November 24, 2016, Todt was released from KSC with immediate effect.

On January 6, 2017, Todt was hired as the new director of professional football at Hamburger SV . He received a contract dated December 31, 2018. He was released on March 8, 2018. At this point in time, after 25 matchdays in the 2017/18 season, HSV was seven points behind the relegation place in the table. Since the chairman of the board, Heribert Bruchhagen , had been relieved of his duties on the same day , Todt was informed of the release Bruchhagen's previous deputy and acting successor Frank Wettstein . The then HSV coach, Bernd Hollerbach , was also released a short time later. Todts was released on the initiative of the then president of the e. V., Bernd Hoffmann , who had been elected chairman of the HSV Fußball AG supervisory board just one day before Todt's dismissal and, according to his own statement, was aiming for a “realignment” of the AG.
