Kevin Kampl (born October 9, 1990 in Solingen , Germany ) is a Slovenian soccer player . The midfielder has been under contract with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig since the 2017/18 season .

family

Kevin Kampl's parents emigrated from the then Yugoslavian town of Maribor to the Federal Republic of Germany at a young age and settled in Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia . There they worked in a car dealership. In 1990 Kampl was born in Solingen and grew up there too. He has two older brothers who both played amateur soccer. Kampl does not have German citizenship , but announced in July 2019 that it would apply for it.

Club career

First experiences in the active area

Kampl started playing football at VfB Solingen at the age of four . In the following years he convinced the youngsters of Solingen and was noticed by the Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where he did a trial training session. As a result, Kampl switched to the club's offspring in 1997. From this point on, he went through all youth teams and was also used in the second team from 2009. He made his senior debut on June 6, 2009 (34th matchday of the fourth-class Regionalliga West ) in the 1: 3 home defeat against the second team of Borussia Mönchengladbach , when he came on for Rico Weiler in the 79th minute.

Professional contract and loan to SpVgg Greuther Fürth

In March 2010 Kampl received a professional contract in Leverkusen, but was not used by the professional team until the end of the season. For the 2010/11 season he moved on loan to the then second division club SpVgg Greuther Fürth . He made his professional debut on October 29, 2010, when he was substituted on on the tenth match day of the 2nd Bundesliga . Kampl could not fight for a regular place with the Fürthern, injuries also played a role here. In January 2011 the loan agreement was terminated.

Unsuccessful return and top performers in Osnabrück

At Bayer 04 Leverkusen he played almost exclusively in the fourth division team, but was also included in the first team's squad and made his first competitive appearance for Leverkusen on February 24, 2011 in the Europa League match against Metalist Kharkiv .

In the summer of 2011 he signed on with VfL Osnabrück , who had previously been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga. Kampl completed 35 games in the following season, in which he scored two goals and gave five assists. With an average of 2.87 given by the sports magazine Kicker , he was the best Osnabrück player this season.

Via Aalen to Salzburg

After a year, Kampl used a release clause in his contract in the summer of 2012 and joined VfR Aalen , which - unlike Osnabrück - had been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. He signed a four-year contract there. However, he only fulfilled this for about two months: within the same exchange period , Kampl left VfR on August 31, 2012 - after two goals and two assists in the previous three league games and one further assists in the first round match of the DFB Cup - VfR again and switched to Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg . He also signed a four-year contract with the Salzburg team.

With four goals and nine assists, he had a share in Salzburg's second place in the Bundesliga. In the following season he qualified with the club for participation in the Europa League - after failing to qualify for the Champions League -, came to nine missions and scored three goals. In the group stage, Salzburg became group winners; Ajax Amsterdam was defeated in the sixteenth finals ; against FC Basel was the end of the last sixteen. In the league, Kampl had made 33 appearances and nine hits. At the end of the season there was the championship title . In the 2014/15 season, Kampl and Salzburg failed to qualify for the Champions League after they had prevailed against FK Qarabağ Ağdam at Malmö FF . Kampl was used in all four games and provided one assist. In the league he came to 18 missions (five goals, seven assists). In the Europa League , he was used in all six games, gave four assists and scored just as often. At the end of the group stage, Salzburg won the group.

Borussia Dortmund

On January 1, 2015, Kampl returned to Germany and joined Borussia Dortmund . There his contract ran until June 30, 2019. By the end of the season, he played 16 competitive games for BVB.

Return to Bayer 04 again

In the absence of any prospect of more working times under the new coach Thomas Tuchel , Kampl left BVB for the following season and joined his youth club Bayer Leverkusen. He received a contract that runs until 2020. He played his first Bundesliga game for Bayer Leverkusen on September 12, 2015, when he lost 1-0 at home to SV Darmstadt 98 when he came on for Christoph Kramer in the 58th minute . On September 26, 2015, he scored his first goal in the German Bundesliga with the 3-0 goal for Leverkusen in the game at Werder Bremen .

In an interview with the kicker sports magazine at the end of June 2017, Kampl said that he did not want to play for the club again. He justified this wish, among other things, with the dismissal of his long-time coach Roger Schmidt in March of that year, the departure of which hit him. He also expressed the idea of following his former coach to the People's Republic of China , where Schmidt looks after the first division side Beijing Guoan . In fact, Bayer 04 Leverkusen negotiated with Beijing Guoan in July about a change from Kampl; However, this did not materialize before the end of the transfer period in the PRC on July 14th. In a conversation with Sky Sport twelve days later, Kampl relativized his statement from the previous month to the extent that it had been clear to him that if the transfer to Beijing did not take place, he would remain “Bayer 04 player” and “with the club one hundred percent “identify. Kampl revealed to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger that his firm intention to leave Leverkusen was based on the negotiating status of both clubs, according to which there was "actually little doubt" about a change. Kampl did not want to rule out a move to the PRC at a later date.

RB Leipzig

Despite his previous statements, Kampl left the club on August 31, 2017, during the 2017/18 season , and moved to league rivals RB Leipzig .

His contract in Leipzig runs until 2023.

National team

After a use for the U20 selection debuted Kampl 13 November 2009 at 1: 0 victory in the European Championship qualifier in Nova Gorica against Malta for Slovenia U21 national team . The Slovenian U21 national team missed the group win and the associated participation in the qualifying games for the U21 European Championship 2013 in Israel due to a 1: 2 defeat in the last game on September 6, 2012 in Maribor against Sweden . In this game Kampl ran for the last time for this age group.

On October 12, 2012 Kampl ran for the first time for the Slovenian national football team in a 2-1 win in the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus in Maribor . In qualifying for the 2014 finals in Brazil , Kampl made seven appearances in which he scored a goal and just missed second place in the group with the selection that would have allowed him to participate in the playoffs. In the subsequent qualification for the 2016 European Championship in France , Kampl played eight times and qualified third for the qualifying games in which the Slovenes were eliminated against Ukraine . In October 2016, Kampl canceled the World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and England , for which he was criticized. On September 6, 2018, he played for the Slovenian national team for the last time in the 2-1 defeat in the group game in League C of the UEFA Nations League in Ljubljana against Bulgaria . On November 9, 2018, Kampl resigned from the national team at the age of 28 after a total of 28 games.
