Akhtala ( Georgian ახტალა , ɑχtʼɑlɑ ) is a health resort in Georgia . It is located in the eastern Georgian region of Kakheti and is a western suburb of the city of Gurjaani , to which it belongs administratively.
Akhtala is 122 km east of the Georgian capital Tbilisi on the southern edge of the Alaşan Valley .
Akhtala is characterized by a temperate continental climate: there are hot summers and mild winters ; the average annual rainfall is 700 mm.
News about Akhtala can be found in the works of the Georgian historian Wachuschti Batonishvili (called Bagrationi ) from the 18th century. A mineral-containing mud extracted on the outskirts is suitable for medical-therapeutic purposes and has been used for cures since the 1920s. A healing spring was discovered in 1924, a small sanatorium was built in 1932 and the health clinic was opened in 1935.
