Gurkursprung is a nature reserve in the Gurktal Alps ( Carinthia ). In it lie the two source lakes of the Gurk , the Gurksee and the Torersee .

The nature reserve was established in 1981 (LGBl. 11/1981, 24/1981) and covers 1497 hectares, which are spread over the communities of Albeck and Ebene Reichenau . The reason for the protection was the occurrence of the Mornell ringed plover . It is located 1400 to 2300 m above sea level and is privately owned. The Hochrindl- Seebachern landscape protection area connects to the southeast .

location

The area is located in the central area of the Gurktal Alps, northeast of Ebene Reichenau . The core area are the two small lakes and their surroundings. They are framed by the peaks Großer Speikkofel, Torer, Bretthöhe and Lattersteighöhe. In the west of the nature reserve is the garden valley of the Saureggenbach, which lies at the foot of the Kaserhöhe.

The rocks are predominantly Paleozoic slates.

vegetation

A large part of the area is taken up by subalpine spruce forest. Due to the heavy forestry use, it is species-poor and monotonous. There are also pine trees on steep, warm southern slopes . Green alder bushes indicate avalanche channels. Loose, light spruce and larch stands follow upwards, the undergrowth of which consists of alpine roses, blueberries, lingonberries and heather. These dwarf shrub stands are followed by alpine lawns, in the area of the lakes this is a crooked sedge lawn . In the area of the two lakes there are small areas of flat bogs and snow valley vegetation .

Human influence

The alpine lawns are grazed intensively, which also pushes back the dwarf shrub population. The forest use of the forests is intensive and takes place without nature conservation law requirements. Monotonous spruce forests dominate, the forest road network is dense. Hunting is not subject to any restrictions, parts of the nature reserve are restricted hunting areas. Tourism has little impact, there are hiking trails and ski tourers in winter. In 1989 the area was classified as satisfactory from a nature conservation point of view.
