The Gurksee is a small lake in the Gurktal Alps ( Carinthia ) in the municipality of Albeck and one of the two source lakes of the Gurk . It is located in the Gurkursprung nature reserve .

The lake is located 1970 m above sea level and covers an area of ​​0.4 hectares. It is 85 m long and 65 m wide. The maximum depth is 1.5 m, the lake freezes completely in winter. The water volume is 3044 m³, the catchment area covers 0.41 km².

The bedrock consists of monkshood slate , a meta diabase - phyllite . The surrounding vegetation is predominantly crooked sedge .

The water is very cold and poor in nutrients. There is only a small amount of algae biomass. At phytoplankton are Gymnodinium , Homoeothrix , Trachelomonas planctonica and unspecified diatoms known. In macrozoobenthos , larvae of Melampophylax nepos and other trichoptera dominate the lake . Since the lake freezes through in winter, there are no fish in it.
