Koen Casteels (born June 25, 1992 in Bonheiden ) is a Belgian football player who has been playing for VfL Wolfsburg since July 2015 .
Career
societies
He started playing football at KAC Betekom at the age of four and moved to the youth department of KRC Genk after his tenth birthday . After Casteels had played for KRC Genk in his youth in Belgium , he was accepted into the club's professional squad from July 2009. In the summer of 2011 he moved to Germany for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, where he signed a four-year contract. In the 2011/12 season he was only used in the second team (U-23) in the then fourth-class Regionalliga Süd . Due to the failure of regular goalkeeper Tom Starke in October 2011, he moved to the bench of the professional team for two competitive games as the second goalkeeper.
For the 2012/13 season Casteels was the second goalkeeper behind Tim Wiese . He continued to collect match practice in the U-23 in the Regionalliga Südwest . On September 23, 2012 he made his professional debut when he moved into the starting line-up for the injured Wiese in the 3-1 win against Hannover 96 . When Heurelho Gomes was signed at the end of January , Casteels maintained his position as number 2 against the temporarily suspended Wiese. When Gomes was injured on Matchday 28 and was out until the end of the season, he took over his position as the goalkeeper.
In the new season, Casteels began as a regular goalkeeper, but had to temporarily cede this role to Jens Grahl during the season . On April 6, 2014, Casteels suffered a broken shin during the Bundesliga match against Hertha BSC , which is why the goalkeeper was operated on the same day.
Since Casteels was unable to play at Hoffenheim in the 2014/15 season due to his injury and Oliver Baumann's commitment , he moved to VfL Wolfsburg in January 2015 . and signed a contract until June 2018, but was loaned out directly to Werder Bremen until the end of the 2014/15 season . He made his competitive debut for Werder on March 4, 2015 when he lost 3-1 to Arminia Bielefeld in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. His first Bundesliga appearance followed on April 19, 2015 in a 1-0 home win against Hamburger SV . He played the last games of the season as a regular goalkeeper.
After the season Casteels returned to Wolfsburg. He made his competitive debut for VfL due to an injury to Diego Benaglio on August 1, 2015 in the DFL Supercup in a 5-4 win against FC Bayern Munich on penalties and won his first title. In a penalty shootout, he was able to parry a penalty with his foot. He then played three Bundesliga games until Benaglio returned.
On June 22, 2017, Casteels extended his contract in Wolfsburg early to 2021, and on December 11, 2019 to June 2024.
National team
On August 5, 2009 Casteels completed his first junior international match for the Belgian U-19 national team under Marc van Geersom , for which he played seven more games until July 21, 2011. He also took part in the U-19 European Championship in Romania. However, he saw the red card in the 13th minute in the first group match against the eventual title winners Spain (1: 4) . Since the Belgian national team was eliminated in the preliminary round, this was also his last appearance.
In several qualifiers for the Football World Cup 2014 Casteels was in the squad of the A team , without having been used. At the World Cup itself, he is not part of the squad due to injury. It was only since the friendly against Russia on March 28, 2017 that he was reassigned to the national team. However, there was no actual stake until October 2018.
