Admir Mehmedi (born March 16, 1991 in Gostivar , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Swiss football player who has been active for German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg since the second half of the 2017/18 season .

Career

Admir Mehmedi, who is used as a striker , played for a year in the youth team of AC Bellinzona , after which he moved to FC Winterthur .

FC Zurich

In 2006 he moved from FC Winterthur to the youth department of FC Zurich . In 2008 he came under head coach Bernard Challandes to some partial appearances in the A-squad, in which he was able to score two goals. In addition, Mehmedi became Swiss champions with eleven league appearances in the 2008/09 season . During the 2010/11 season , Mehmedi became a regular at FCZ and scored ten goals in 33 national and international games.

One of his career highlights so far was winning the Blue Stars / FIFA Youth Cup at the beginning of May 2008. After falling 2-0 down against the offspring of FC Basel , Mehmedi scored all three goals for a 3-2 win.

Dynamo Kiev

On January 6, 2012, FC Zurich announced on its website that Mehmedi had left the club for Kiev with immediate effect. He signed a contract with the Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev until 2016. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. On the first day of the second half of the 2011/12 Premjer-Liha season he made his debut on the starting line-up against Arsenal Kiev (1-0). Mehmedi scored his first goal on his second appearance against Krywyj Rih when he scored the 3-0.

Sc freiburg

On July 9, 2013 Dynamo Kiev announced that Mehmedi would be loaned to SC Freiburg for one season . After the deadline, the Breisgauer had a purchase option for the Swiss. On matchday 3, in the 90th minute, the Swiss saw his first red card in the Bundesliga . After a strong season in which Mehmedi scored twelve goals in 32 league games and thus had a significant share in relegation, Mehmedi was firmly committed.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

After SC Freiburg was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, Mehmedi moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the 2015/16 season . He signed a four-year contract with the Werkself until June 30, 2019. He made his competitive debut for Leverkusen on August 8, 2015 in the first round of the DFB Cup with Sportfreunde Lotte , in which he prepared the interim 2-0 through Hakan Çalhanoğlu . Even a week later in his first league game for Leverkusen, he was able to score a point when he prepared the winning goal for 2-1 by Julian Brandt against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . Mehmedi scored five goals in eleven Champions League games for Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

VfL Wolfsburg

On January 31, 2018, the league rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg agreed on an immediate transfer of Mehmedis to Lower Saxony . There he received a contract that is dated until the end of June 2022. He scored the first goal for his new club when he lost 2-1 to his previous club Bayer 04 Leverkusen on March 3, 2018.

National team

After numerous appearances in Switzerland's U-17 and U-21 national teams , he was called up for the first time for the senior national team in May 2011 and his first appearance with the Swiss national team in the European Championship qualifier against England on June 4, 2011 (2: 2).

With the Swiss U-21 national team , he was able to qualify for the 2011 U-21 European Championship the year before . In May 2011 he was nominated by U-21 national coach Pierluigi Tami for the provisional and later the final squad. Mehmedi was used in two group games. He scored two goals against Belarus. In the semi-final against the Czech Republic, Mehmedi scored the 1-0 winner in the 114th minute, which put Switzerland in the final. However, this one lost 2-0 to Spain .

With the senior national team, Mehmedi qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Switzerland met France , Ecuador and Honduras in the group stage . Mehmedi was born in March 1991 into a family of Albanian origin in the Yugoslav republic of Macedonia , which became independent around six months later . In 1993 he emigrated to Switzerland with his mother and older brother and settled in Bellinzona , following his father, who had previously worked as a pizza maker in Ticino because he saw no economic prospects in his home country. The family later moved on to Winterthur .

Mehmedi attended a sports boarding school and completed training as a commercial clerk in Zurich . In July 2016 he married his partner in Gostivar. Both are parents of a son born in May 2017. Mehmedi says he speaks German , Italian and Albanian as well as English and French .
