history
1938-1950
The tournament was first held on Ascension Day 1939 with twelve teams. In 1941 the organizers moved from the Heiligfeld sports field to the Letzigrund stadium. The first staging in a new stadium brought two innovations: The city of Zurich took over the patronage and the field of participants increased to 16 teams. In 1946 a foreign team played with FC Mulhouse in the first year after the war . In the following years, more and more teams from abroad took part in the tournament.
1951-1990
In 1951, the Wolverhampton Wanderers , a team from England traveled to Zurich for the first time . Since 1976, teams from Italy have also participated in the tournament (including AC Milan , Inter Milan and AS Roma ). In 1989, FC Barcelona became the first Spanish team to take part in the tournament.
Since 1991
In 1991, FIFA took over the patronage. In 1995 the name of this international football tournament was changed to today's Blue Stars / FIFA Youth Cup. In 1999, São Paulo FC won the first time in the history of the Blue Stars / FIFA Youth Cup a team from outside Europe. Before moving to the new Letzigrund in 2009, the tournament moved first to the Hardturm stadium for one year and then to the Buchlern sports complex for another two years.
