Hakan Çalhanoğlu [ ˌt͡ʃalhanˈoːlu ] (born February 8, 1994 in Mannheim ; in German-speaking countries also Hakan Calhanoglu ) is a Turkish football player who is under contract with AC Milan . In addition, Çalhanoğlu, who also has German citizenship , is a Turkish national player .

Club career

Beginnings

Hakan Çalhanoğlu began playing football for the local clubs 1. FC Turanspor Mannheim and Police SV Mannheim before he moved to the youth department of SV Waldhof Mannheim at the age of seven . For the 2009/10 season Çalhanoğlu moved to the B-youth (U17) of the Karlsruher SC , with whom he played in the B-junior Bundesliga . As early as the 2010/11 season, he was promoted to the A-Youth (U19) and was henceforth used in the A-Juniors Bundesliga , although he could have played one more season in the U17.

Karlsruher SC

During the winter break of the 2011/12 season , Çalhanoğlu, at that time in the younger age group of the U19s, was allowed to complete the preparation under head coach Jørn Andersen with the professional team. By the end of the season he was under Andersen and his successor Markus Kauczinski in 14 second division games (13 times from the start). In March 2012 he signed a contract with KSC until June 30, 2016. At the end of the season, Çalhanoğlu was relegated to the third division with the professional team .

In August 2012, Hamburger SV acquired the transfer rights to Çalhanoğlu, who, however, remained in the KSC squad on loan in the 2012/13 season . Çalhanoğlu established himself under Markus Kauczinski as a regular player and scored 17 goals in 36 league appearances (35 times from the start), with which he finished fourth in the top scorer list . There were also eleven templates , making him the third best scorer and making a significant contribution to the KSC's direct return to the 2nd Bundesliga. On the last matchday of the A-Junioren-Bundesliga, Çalhanoğlu was used once in the U19 threatened with relegation, who managed to stay up through a win. For his achievements in the professional team, he was voted third division player of the year.

Hamburger SV

For the 2013/14 season , Çalhanoğlu moved to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV , who had already acquired his transfer rights the previous year and provided him with a contract that ran until June 30, 2016. At HSV, Çalhanoğlu established himself as a regular under the head coaches Thorsten Fink , Bert van Marwijk and Mirko Slomka . In the worst season in the history of the Hamburg club until then - the season ended with 27 points on the relegation place - he was one of the few top performers with eleven goals in 32 league games (28 times from the start). Çalhanoğlu scored four of the eleven goals with a direct free kick, including one from around 40 meters. In the relegation, in which Çalhanoğlu was in the starting line-up in both games, HSV was able to secure relegation against SpVgg Greuther Fürth . In February 2014, he had already extended his contract term to June 30, 2018.

Transfer to Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Çalhanoğlu at Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2015)

For the 2014/15 season , Çalhanoğlu moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He received a contract with the Werkself until June 30, 2019 and the shirt number 10 previously worn by Emre Can . The transfer was preceded by Çalhanoğlu's public request to leave Hamburger SV - despite the contract extension in February to 2018. In particular, the sudden and in large parts of the public perceived total renunciation of all previously made "oaths of loyalty" to the club and its surroundings triggered a shitstorm on his Facebook page.

“I have always said that I feel comfortable in Hamburg and at HSV. I want to play for the club in the Bundesliga for a long time and become an integral part of the team in the years to come. In our difficult situation, I would also like to set an example. "

- Çalhanoğlu at the contract extension with HSV in early February 2014

When HSV training began on June 18, 2014, Çalhanoğlu did not show up and had a medical certificate from the previous day, issued by a Heidelberg psychologist, stating that he was unable to work for four weeks due to mental problems related to the fan reactions. At the same time, he got himself a new cell phone number and was therefore unavailable for several days for his employer, who wanted to have him examined by two of the association's medical officers. As a result of the successful medical check in Leverkusen, his sick leave was canceled prematurely, which actually existed until July 15th with the Hamburger SV. Following the announcement of the successful medical check, Hamburger SV, in the person of Oliver Kreuzer , expressed itself critically about the said processes and in particular publicly questioned the credibility of the player with regard to his mental illness as well as the credibility of his treating doctor.

For his part, Çalhanoğlu accused cruisers of not having kept oral agreements regarding a possible change of club. In connection with the former football professional Andreas Biermann , who died on July 18, 2014 as a result of his depressive illness , his former teammate at FC St. Pauli, Michél Mazingu-Dinzey , directed serious allegations against Çalhanoğlu and his behavior.

The first meeting of the two teams after the change on matchday 10 of the 2014/15 season was the most unfair game of the Bundesliga season at that time with 54 fouls and nine yellow cards .

Already in his first season Çalhanoğlu was able to assert himself as a regular player; first as a ten , later in the sixth position . In the 2014/15 season, he played 47 of 48 possible competitive games in the Bundesliga , Champions League and DFB Cup and was involved in 24 goals (13 goals and eleven assists). In the first half of the 2015/16 season he was able to maintain his regular place: He played in 27 of 28 possible competitive games and was able to participate in 16 goals (six goals and ten assists). In the second half of the season he missed only three of the 22 games, but was only able to participate in five goals (two goals, three assists).

AC Milan

For the 2017/18 season , Çalhanoğlu moved to the Italian Serie A at AC Milan . He signed a contract there until the end of June 2021. The youth department of SV Waldhof Mannheim received a training allowance of around 200,000 euros in the course of the transfer. In his first season Çalhanoğlu was under the head coach Vincenzo Montella and his successor Gennaro Gattuso in 31 league games (25 times from the start), in which he scored 6 goals. Also in the 2018/19 season he was a regular under Gattuso and scored 3 goals in 36 league appearances (34 times in the starting XI). For the season 2019/20 took over Marco Giampaolo team, which, however, in October by Stefano Pioli was replaced. Çalhanoğlu was a regular all season long and played 35 league games (34 times from the start) in which he scored 9 goals. He scored 6 goals after the game was restarted on matchday 27 after a three-month break due to the COVID-19 pandemic . For his achievements in July 2020, Çalhanoğlu was named Italy's Footballer of the Month by the Associazione Italiana Calciatori football players' association.

National team

U national teams

Çalhanoğlu played for some youth teams (U16, U17, U19, U20, U21) of the Turkish Football Association . As part of the U20 World Cup in 2013 , he was appointed to the tournament squad of the Turkish U20 national team. The team reached the last sixteen and was eliminated from the tournament by a 4-1 defeat against the eventual winner of the French selection. Çalhanoğlu completed all the games and was one of the most noticeable players in the tournament. With his subsequent goal in the last group game against the Australian U20 national team, which he scored with a long shot, he initiated the victory of his team and thus the progression. Furthermore, in this last U20 group game he was elected Man of the Match and received the Gallipoli Friendship Medal from the Australian Embassy Council .

A national team

Since he already had German citizenship before the games for the U national team in Turkey , he could have played for the German national team. In the meantime, however, he had played compulsory internationals for Turkey and was no longer eligible to play for the selection teams of the DFB . For the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Romania Çalhanoğlu was appointed by the Turkish national coach Fatih Terim in the senior team and made his international debut by substituting in the match against Andorra's selection on September 6, 2013 .

"Pistol affair"

In October 2013 after the Turkish national team's World Cup qualifier against the Dutch team , Gökhan Töre stormed into the room of his teammates Çalhanoğlu and Ömer Toprak and threatened them with a pistol. The attack was aimed at a friend of Toprak's who was in the room.

The Turkish press wrote that after this incident, Çalhanoğlu and Toprak had given the national team's coaching staff an ultimatum to stay away from the national team if Töres was nominated. After this incident, Töre and the two victims were never in the team squad at the same time. After the national coach Fatih Terim invited Töre again as part of two European Championship qualifiers alongside Çalhanoğlu and Toprak, the two signed off due to injury. This fact ensured that the incident was picked up again in the specialist press. After there was no official confirmation for this incident for a long time, Çalhanoğlu's father Hüseyin confirmed in a newspaper interview the armed threat to his son and Topraks from Törre and stated that the two players and Nuri Şahin were upset about this action. But he contradicted the rumors of an ultimatum and emphasized that the players really canceled due to injury and did not use this as an excuse. Çalhanoğlu himself reported on the attack on October 18, 2014 in the current sports studio .

Comeback in the national team

In March 2015, Çalhanoğlu and coach Terim agreed on a comeback in the national team on the sidelines of a Champions League game after Çalhanoğlu had not played a game for Turkey for over half a year. On March 20, 2015, Çalhanoğlu was reassigned to the squad.

He was appointed to the Turkish squad for the 2016 European Championship in France . In the first game he was in the starting line-up and came on as a substitute in the second game. After the preliminary round, Turkey was eliminated from the tournament as the fifth-best third in the table.

In the successful and early qualification for UEFA Euro 2020 , Çalhanoğlu was one of the top and key players in the Turkish team.

Life and miscellaneous

At the end of January 2017, Çalhanoğlu caused a stir with the publication of a video in which he supported the Turkish campaign “Evet” (“Yes”), which called for approval of the proposed amendment to the Turkish constitution in favor of a presidential system at the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pending referendum.

Confrontation with Trabzonspor

From March 2016, Çalhanoğlu and FIFA were in a "legal dispute" because Çalhanoğlu had signed a contract with Trabzonspor at the age of 17 . The contract provided for a change to the 2012/13 season, but this did not materialize. On February 2, 2017, he was banned from all competitive games for a period of four months. He was also ordered to pay Trabzonspor 100,000 euros . For the period of his suspension, Çalhanoğlu did not receive any salary or bonuses from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, but continued to participate in training.

family

His parents migrated to Germany from a village in the Turkish province of Bayburt , which is why Çalhanoğlu was born in 1994 as the son of Turkish parents in the German city of Mannheim.

Çalhanoğlu's brother Muhammed is also a footballer.
