Alexander Esswein (born March 25, 1990 in Worms , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German football player . The offensive player was most recently under contract with Hertha BSC and was a multiple German junior national player.

Youth and 1. FC Kaiserslautern

Esswein spent his childhood in Kleinkarlbach and started playing football at TSV Neuleiningen when he was six . He played in the E-Jugend at VfR Frankenthal . Even as U-19 player, he made his debut for the first team of 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the second Bundesliga , on 17 December 2007 (Round 17) in one when he: 2 away defeat against 1. VfL Wolfsburg

He made his debut for VfL on February 21, 2009 (21st matchday) when coach Felix Magath came on for Sergej Karimov in the 61st minute in the 2-1 home win against Hertha BSC . Behind the striker duo Grafite and Edin Džeko as well as the attackers Caiuby , Mahir Sağlık and Yoshito Ōkubo , Esswein was only striker number six for the entire season and was mostly used in the reserve team. Nevertheless, after the end of the season he won the first championship title in the club's history. In the following season, Esswein could not prevail against the competition in the storm and was still used in the second team.

Dynamo Dresden

Due to a lack of prospects, Esswein left VfL Wolfsburg and signed a two-year contract with third division club Dynamo Dresden on August 16, 2010 . Here he was able to convince from the start and was the team's top scorer. In September 2010 and April 2011 Esswein was voted 3rd league player of the month . At the end of the season he received the award for Player of the Year in the 3rd division. With his achievements he drew the attention of high-class teams to himself.

1. FC Nuremberg

For the 2011/12 season Esswein moved to the Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg . At the beginning of the second half of the season he was not in the squad twice before he recovered and showed better performances and the first goals of the season. In total, he scored twice in 27 missions.

FC Augsburg

On January 4, 2014 Esswein moved to FC Augsburg , where he received a contract until June 30, 2017. There he played European games at club level for the first time in his career, when Augsburg was represented in the Europa League in the 2015/16 season .

Hertha BSC

On August 25, 2016 it was announced that Esswein was moving to Hertha BSC , where he received a four-year contract. In the 3: 3 against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 24, 2016, he scored one goal and prepared another. With that he collected his first two scorer points for the capital club.

VfB Stuttgart

On December 22, 2018, VfB Stuttgart announced that the Esswein club had initially signed on loan for the second half of the 2018/19 season and had secured a purchase option for a long-term commitment. He came to 17 Bundesliga games and was used once in the relegation . After relegation to the 2nd division, the purchase option was not drawn and he returned to Hertha BSC.

Return to Berlin

After his return, the offensive player under the head coaches Čović , Klinsmann and Labbadia only made a few short appearances in the Bundesliga, played one half in the DFB Cup and was twice on the field for the full season in the Regionalliga . His contract, which expired in summer 2020, was not extended, which is why Esswein left the club free of charge.

National team

Esswein played for all German national U-teams from the U17 . His greatest success at international level was third place at the 2007 U17 World Cup in South Korea . Among other things, he scored the 2-1 winner in stoppage time in the game for third place against Ghana after being substituted on in the 82nd minute.

The then U21 national coach Rainer Adrion invited Esswein to the U21 national team for the first time on May 18, 2011 .
