society

In 2001 he became a professional footballer at Cerezo Osaka and scored 51 goals in 95 league games in four years. In 2002, with 18 goals in the 2nd division, he had a large share in the immediate resurgence of his team after relegation in the previous year as 16th in the league. In 2005 he then moved to RCD Mallorca in the Spanish Primera División . There, however, he never made the breakthrough and he scored only 5 goals in 39 games. After two years in Spain, Ōkubo returned to Cerezo Osaka. Many Cerezo fans believed that he would be the salvation for the club as the team struggled against relegation to the 2nd division. However, his 6 goals in 21 games were not enough to save Cerezo from relegation.

After the relegation of Cerezo Osaka, he moved to Vissel Kobe for the 2007 season , who won the relegation against Avispa Fukuoka and thus made it to the top division. At Vissel Kobe Ōkubos goal performance improved with 14 goals in 31 league games in the 2007 season. With these performances he drew the attention of European teams to himself. In the winter of the 2008/09 season he was finally signed by the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . In the Wolves , Ōkubo met his national team colleague Makoto Hasebe . The Japanese made his Bundesliga debut on January 31, 2009 against 1. FC Köln . From coach Felix Magath Ōkubo came on in the 66th minute for Christian Gentner and immediately prepared the 1-1 equalizer for Grafite . In his first six months in the Bundesliga, he played nine times as a substitute in the last third of the game. After the second half of the season, VfL Wolfsburg was the German champions for the first time in the club's history. For the 2009/2010 season he moved back to Vissel Kobe.

In January 2013 he moved to Kawasaki Frontale , where he was three times top scorer of the J-League. He then moved to FC Tokyo in January 2017 . After just one year, he signed a contract with first division club Kawasaki Frontale in early 2018. He played for the club from Kawasaki until mid-2018. In July 2018, he moved to league rivals Júbilo Iwata . At the end of 2019, he was relegated to the second division with the club from Iwata . After relegation, he left the club and joined the second division Tokyo Verdy in early 2020 .

National team

Nationalkubo made his national team debut on May 31, 2003 in a friendly against South Korea . For a long time he remained in the national team without scoring, so that he was no longer considered for the national team by national coach Zico after his move to Spain in 2005. After almost a year without an international match in the senior national team, Zico nominated him in 2005 for the Japanese trip to Europe, where he was only used briefly. After two more years without an international match, he was called back to the squad against Cameroon by the new national coach Ivica Osim due to his good performance at Vissel Kobe , where he was right in the starting line-up. In the next game against Egypt, he scored his first two goals in the national team. Ōkubo is now also regularly appointed to the national team by the new national coach Takeshi Okada . In February he scored another goal against Thailand in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

In 2004 he played for Japan's Olympic team at the Athens Olympic Games .

Ōkubo was in the ranks of the Kirin Cup 2003, the Confederations Cup 2003 and the East Asian Football Championship in 2003. He was nominated for the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa .
