- Number of points scored
- Goal difference

Should one of these teams also win the 2017 Kaiser Cup, the fourth-placed team moves up. The three worst teams were relegated to the J2 League 2018 .
Attendees
A total of eighteen teams took part in the season. Here left Nagoya Grampus , Shonan Bellmare and Avispa Fukuoka as the worst teams in the preseason league towards J2 League 2017 . The three relegated teams were replaced by the 2016 J2 League champion , Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo , the runner-up Shimizu S-Pulse and the winner of the promotion playoffs Cerezo Osaka . Sapporo returned to the J1 League for the fourth time after five years, while Shimizu managed to return directly to the House of Lords after relegation in 2015.
