The Syrian Professional League 2016/17 was the 46th season of the highest Syrian football league since it was founded in 1966. The season began on December 23, 2016 and ended on August 18, 2017. The defending champion was al-Jaish .
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 30 games per team. This represented a change from the previous season , which was initially held in two groups of ten teams each with a subsequent final round. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Number of points scored in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- Goal difference from all games
- Number of goals in all games
At the end of the season, the team with the highest points should qualify for the first qualifying round of the AFC Champions League 2018 . Since the champion did not receive a license for the Champions League, he started together with the winner of the Cup of the Republic in the group stage of the AFC Cup 2018 .
The four clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-class 2nd Syrian League .
Attendees
As a result of the switch from a two-track to a single-track league and the associated reduction in the size of the first division from 20 to 16 clubs, there were no promoters from the 2nd Syrian division in 2015/16. The four relegated members of the 2015/16 season include Umayya , who retired before the last season, al-Nidal , al-Jihad SC and Baniyas Refinery SC . Al-Nidal and the al-Jihad SC had to return to the 2nd Syrian League after three years in the Syrian professional league. For the Baniyas Refinery SC, the descent meant the end of its five-year membership in the Syrian upper house of football.
Due to the ongoing civil war in the country , all games took place either in the capital Damascus or in the western port city of Latakia .
