The Kuwaiti Premier League 2016/17 was the 55th season of the highest Kuwaiti football league since it was founded in 1961. The season began on September 28, 2016 and ended on May 25, 2017. The defending champion was al Qadsia Kuwait .
mode
The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 28 games per team. Due to the odd number of teams, one team paused per game day. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference from all games
- Number of goals in all games
At the end of the season, the team with the highest points qualified for the first qualifying round of the 2018 AFC Champions League . In addition, the winner of the Kuwait Emir Cup took part in the group stage of the AFC Cup 2018 . As of September 2017, however , the Kuwaiti Football Association is banned from FIFA and thus excluded from all international competitions.
Due to the reduction of the league for the next season to eight teams, the seven clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-rate Kuwaiti Division One .
Attendees
As in previous seasons, there was no second Kuwaiti league in the 2015/16 season and thus no relegation or promotion. Due to the re-participation of al Tadhamon SC , which had to file for bankruptcy after the 2014/15 season , and the approval of the newly founded Burgan SC in 2009 , the number of participating teams rose to 15.
