John M. Stephens

John Morley Stephens (born November 17, 1932 in Valparaiso , Indiana - † June 18, 2015 in Huntington Beach , California ) was an American cinematographer .

Stephens began his career in the 1950s as a camera assistant and has been involved in numerous conventional A-entertainment films since the mid-1960s as a simple camera operator, including Forty Cars Westward , The Man Who Lived Twice , Samson Is Not Closed beat , Grand Prix and Zebra Ice Station . His tutors included veteran Hollywood veterans such as Lionel Lindon , Daniel L. Fapp , Robert Surtees and James Wong Howe . Towards the end of the same decade, Stephens rose to the position of chief cameraman, but was still brought in as a simple cameraman or chief camera of a second filming team (so-called second unit ). He held the latter position until 2009.

As head cameraman, John M. Stephens was primarily responsible for television productions, beginning with the Bing Crosby Show in 1968. He has photographed several westerns and series such as The People of Shiloh Ranch and Alias ​​Smith and Jones . The series A Sheriff in New York about a lanky wild west with very unique methods in the urban jungle also bore Stephens' visual signature. In William Friedkin's remake of Wages of Fear (1953), Breathless Before Fear (1977), Stephens was one of two chief cameramen in 1976. However, John M. Stephens provided his most famous work in 1997 with his second unit photography for James Cameron's mega blockbuster Titanic , his last job as chief photographer was on an animation video published in 1999.
