Robert Surtees
Robert Surtees (born August 9, 1906 in Covington , Kentucky , † January 5, 1985 in Monterey , California ) was an American cameraman .
Live and act
Robert Surtees went to school in Cincinnati . After graduating from school in 1925, he moved to Los Angeles . There he was hired by Universal as a camera assistant in 1927 and assigned to camera legends Gregg Toland and Joseph Ruttenberg . In 1929 Surtees came to Berlin and worked as a simple cameraman under the direction of Charles Stumar until the following year . In the German capital he photographed, among others, I live for you and The Strange Past of Thea Carter . In early 1930 Surtees returned to Hollywood, where he worked his way up to chief cameraman over the next twelve years.
Surtees worked in this position from 1942 and developed into one of the most respected cameramen in the American film business. He shot classics in black and white as well as in color and received numerous Oscar nominations for his work . His son Bruce Surtees (1937-2012) was also a cameraman.
