The feature film Mutiny on the Bounty from 1962 is the first color film adaptation of the famous mutiny on the HMS Bounty . Like the first film , this version is based on the original book Die Meuterei auf der Bounty: Schiff ohne Hafen (original title: Mutiny on the Bounty ) by Charles Bernard Nordhoff and James N. Hall .

action

In order to import the breadfruit from Tahiti , the Bounty is placed under the command of the infamous Captain Bligh, who soon after the Bounty has left port, instigates a cruel reign of terror on his ship. Minor offenses by his team are punished with the nine-tailed cat and other punishments.

Bligh's initial plan to circumnavigate Cape Horn fails due to the extremely harsh weather conditions. Instead of saving time with the shorter route, as intended, the bounty has to turn around and take the long route around Africa and Australia. Bligh continues to harass the crew to make up for the time lost by the failure.

In addition to Mills, who was rebellious from the start, only Bligh's first officer, the charismatic Fletcher Christian , dares to oppose Bligh.

On arrival in Tahiti, the dormant period of the breadfruit trees has already begun, which is why transplanting for transport is not possible. The men spend happy months with the local women. Christian fell in love with Maimiti, the daughter of Chief Hitihiti. After the Bounty departs , Bligh's atrocities begin to increase.

In order to provide the plants with water, Bligh cuts the crew's water ration, thereby endangering their lives. A sailor who pounces on Bligh in desperation is sentenced to keel - an illegal punishment - and dies horribly. Christian, who had already slightly criticized the rationing of the water, initially shared the atrocities. He does not tolerate criticism from a candidate officer. On April 28, 1789, there was a mutiny: When another sailor was desperate to drink seawater, his life was in immediate danger. Fletcher defies Bligh's orders and gives the dying fresh water. When Bligh kicks Fletcher, he knocks him down and mutinies. Fletcher generously exposes Bligh with the few loyal supporters in a launch . Then the mutineers first return to Tahiti, on the one hand to complete the thinned out crew with locals, on the other hand to take the women connected to them on board. Your goal is an island far away from the busy trade routes. On their way there they come across the island of Pitcairn, which is not correctly drawn on any nautical chart . There they believe they are safe from the expected persecution by the British Admiralty.

Meanwhile, Bligh has returned to England via Timor and is responsible for the loss of the bounty in court. The court found that Bligh was not to blame for the loss of the ship, but that his appointment as captain was a wrong decision. The court agrees to send out a punitive expedition to arrest the mutineers.

Soon after arriving in Pitcairn, Christian considers sailing back to England and facing a military tribunal. To thwart this, some of the mutineers set the bounty on fire. In the unsuccessful attempt to save the ship together with some of his comrades, Christian suffers severe burns and ultimately succumbs to his injuries. The burning bounty sinks into the sea.

background

Filmed from October 1961 to July 1962 on original locations in Tahiti , but also in Moorea ( French Polynesia ) with some locals and lay statists, Mutiny on the Bounty is still one of the most visually impressive films of the 1960s.

The replica of the Bounty used in the film

For the film, a bounty was rebuilt slightly enlarged according to the original plans. This ship sank on October 29, 2012 during Hurricane “Sandy” off the east coast of the United States in the Atlantic, killing two crew members.

The budget was 19 million  US dollars , revenue alone in the United States US $ 9,800,000.

The script follows the testimonies of the mutineers, Bligh is portrayed as a despot . According to some historians , however, Bligh was no stricter than other captains of his time (see Bounty ).

Lewis Milestone took over the direction of Carol Reed after he fell out with Brando over his special requests and starry airs. In contrast to Reed, Milestone did not mess with Brando, but simply let him go. The film became a financial disaster and endangered the existence of the MGM film studio .

A prologue and an epilogue were cut from the theatrical version. These show how the HMS Briton discovered the island of Pitcairn in 1814 and only finds the former gardener of the Bounty, William Brown, there. He reports what happened on the bounty and what happened to the other mutineers. The cut scenes were shown once on television in 1967 at the TV premiere of the film on ABC. Prologue and epilogue are available as bonuses on the DVD.
